Alpina d3 loss of power
Alpina d3 loss of power
Hi I have a d3 single turbo and it's lost its power still drives but turbo not cutting in I've been working on this for over a week now and so far have discovered there is nothing wrong with the following
Turbo is fine
Electronic actuator is fine
Air mass sensor is fine
I've cleaned the egr
I've plugged it in to a computer and it's now saying something to do with the oxygen sensor and glow plug system but I'm sure the is because there is no boost at present has anybody else ever experienced the same thing and fixed the problem if so please help
Thanks

Re: Alpina d3 loss of power
Replying to an old thread, my D3 MT is doing this now. no turbo surge - drives fine, no rattles or warning lights. fuel consumption is fine and motorway cruising at speed limit or thereabout is fine.
Thoughts?

Have you checked for any fault codes and/or coolant temp?

Hi, my cheap one shows no issues. How do I check coolant temp? I'm servicing the car next week. Hopefully not a serious issue ?

Have a look on your code reader - if it's similar to mine (C110), you should be able to read the data stream. Failing that there's a hidden menu on the dash (Google will find the how-to access it).
If the coolant temp is low and/or you have issues with glowplugs/relays, the dpf won't regenerate and will start to clog up, particularly if you do lots of short journeys and/or start/stop. Hope that helps.

Re: Alpina d3 loss of power
Hi,
answering my own question here, the DPF light came on. I guess that explains it.
What's the easiest/less costly way to fix? I'll have the car serviced at the same time.
Edited - having done a bit of reading, my car has 150,000 miles but mostly lives at 75MPH on the motorway in 6th. Is the DPF/CAT the same as the same year 320D?

if that's the case I'm not too fussed about buying a new one.
Thanks

Re: Alpina d3 loss of power
Assuming yours is a monoturbo.... Have a look at the D3 parts catalogue https://www.thealpinaregister.com/downl ... 3_2005.pdf. If not, I wonder if any of the specialists on here could advise you.
If it helps, I've had 2 bmw diesels (352d and 335d) with dpf both of which have done ~150k without any dpf issues and like you, lots of motorway journeys. Both had thermostat changes and one required glowplugs and a relay to make the dpf regenerate. I have a feeling you may have an underlying cause to be solved to prevent a recurrence but will defer to others.

Re: Alpina d3 loss of power
Thanks, yes mine is a monoturbo. Curiously, since the DPF light has been on, some of the power has come back.
I'll do a major service and ask a specialist to look at it. Will update. (i'm doing a very long trip tomorrow and let's see what happens if I keep it in 5th)

Whatever you do, dont fit an aftermarket DPF.Stuck_mojo wrote: ↑Mon Mar 02, 2020 2:49 pmHi,

Buy a genuine one.
The cars dont get on with the pattern part.
Ive first hand knowledge of that problem.
Hopefully your problem is a quick fit. BTW the recommended 'life' for a DPF is 120,000 miles. They can last a lot longer if well looked after. Unfortunately the car is not good at reporting DPF faults til its too late. A code reader is invaluable.

Car goes in on Friday.
good point on aftermarket DPF>
If it needs it replacing I'll buy one on eBay or scrapyard - assuming the part is a BMW one.
