Sat Nav Upgrade and Discs for B5/B6

Post by bfive » Sat Oct 22, 2011 9:12 pm

OK I've had the car 24 hours, now I've got to get everything sorted out to get this car 100% up to date. When I had my B5 there was a problem with the Sat Nav freezing and a couple of minor software glitches. After two attempts by Sytners to repair it they "upgraded" it to a later version of the software under warranty (good job as I was told this would have cost £400-£500 normally - not bad for just jacking in a plug and leaving a computer on for 30 mins to re-build the software!) One of the "benefits" for this upgrade appeared to be 6/7 digit post code entry...and on my B6 it would appear that it still has the "old" version as it does not have this facility, furthermore the map disc in the DVD drive appears to be the original 2006 one!

Does anyone know of any aftermarket places that can upgrade the Sat Nav Software and/or any aftermarket up to date map discs - or is it Sytner and £500 + £200?

I could be mistaken, but I think the firmware update comes on the map disk these days. Ask a more knowledgeable person

Our '04 Roadtser is running 2010 map data. I'm not aware any software update other than the disc is necessary - I just shoved the more recent BMW disc in and it works
Current:
23MY Porsche Macan GTS in Papaya
23MY Cupra Born V3 77kW in Aurora

Previously loved:
ALPINA: E91 B3SBiturbo #127, E92 B3SBiturbo #285, E90 D3Biturbo #097, E85 Roadster S #168 & variety of 'beige' 4 and 6-cyl BMW lumps.
PORSCHE: Macan S, Cayman 981 S, Cayman 981 GTS

Which satNav does the B6 have?

I have the mkIV DVD High version, and am running 2011-1 disks. The firmware was updated to v32 (the latest I believe) by downloading an iso image and burning onto a CD, then installing. Took about 2 - 3 minutes to update.
now gone: Alpina Roadster S, #108

This will be an iDrive navigation.

Thanks for the tips guys. Seems to me that there are certain restrictions with the I Drive Navigation. Think I will go for the latest disc and see what happens - also have a "friend" at one of local BMW dealers who is going to check out the firmware version and go from there. Loving the car, roof down today because of the "hint" of sunshine! Need to make the most before it gets locked away for the winter.

I read this thread with interest today as the bmw sat system I have in the B3 is poor to say the least. I thought it would cost hundreds for an update from BMW.

However there are a few available on the web sites and so invested £30 for a 2011 update for the E90 and fingers crossed when the disc arrives it will improve the format.

Will let you know if I wasted my money or not.

Got the new 2011v32 disc today and works perfectly.

Sourced direct from net and disc slipped in, waited a few minutes and hey presto all updated with full post code entry. Much, much better but the voice directions still retains the American dialect.

Cost £30 + postage which took 1 day to arrive.

Fortunately the voice on my HDD based system in the B3S is in English, although her pronunciation is shocking  .
How to mangle the English language
