Alpina B3.5 on Facebook

Post by Alpina Jim » Tue Oct 12, 2021 10:14 pm

My brother in law spotted this one on Facebook and I had a quick look using my wife's access. :)

Buried in undergrowth with a B3.5 badge and likely to need some serious TLC (Identify this one if you can Bob ), I look forward to seeing more photos of it when it has been recovered.

Also mentioned is that this car was bought new by Freddie Garrity, lead singer of Freddie and the Dreamers.

Interesting spot Jim

My knowledge of older ALPINAs is not as good as it once was. Therefore can someone please confirm, that there were no B3.5 for the E34 but yes for the E28, and all E34 which had a front badge said B10 3.5?

No, the B3.5 was available across the E34 & E32. The E28 equivalent would've been the B2.8. Essentially they got the cosmetic addenda (wheels, bodykit, steering wheel/gear knob, badging, possibly suspension too) but not the engine performance enhancements.

Interestingly, the way Kees curates the Archive, that car you've linked should be a Buchloe built car with two VINs rather than a Sytner build which should then feature under the "Distributors" section and only have one VIN. If Jim's spot is a B3.5, then it 'should' be under Distributors.

Sorry Bob, I never seem to make it easy for you when I spot a potential Alp :).
I wasn't aware of the Distributors section on the Alpina Archive so that is something worth knowing.

In the Facebook chat there is a mention of this being a B11!

James, if you haven't already found it here is the Facebook link........

Good to know Bob. So would this possibly be #6686 in the U.K. distributer section?

With the Sytner cars I'd always assume anything is a possibility until the evidence is in.

If the badging is accurate, then this car isn't B10 3.5/1, which should include the engine modifications, instead it will be a new addition to join the last three cars on Page3. I'd imagine this will continue as a puzzle though since the likelihood that any of the original paperwork remains seems slim.

Far as I know the B11 badging was only ever used on E32 based cars so, as I’m pretty sure from the pics this is an E34, seems unlikely.

The only caveat to this is that the E34 B10 3.5/1 Kat used the same engine as the E32 B11 3.5 Kat and in ALPINA parlance, the code for the M30B35 based engine was B11/1 for the 239PS variant or B11/3 for the 254PS version.Confused yet?

I think it’s therefore more likely a typo on FB, and as a B3.5 it wouldn’t have any engine work anyway, so would still be an M30B35.

oops I was meant to write E32 not E28.

Are you sure that the E28 didn't have any engine enhancements? Because even though examples like the E36 B2.5 and E32 3.5 were and still are considered to be a cosmetic ALPINA. They could be specified with engine enhancements such as camshafts etc. The E32 B3.5 could nearly have everything apart from Mahle pistons

I have always seen reference to and been told by more knowledgeable folk than I that the B2.8 and B3.5 was the designation for an E34 or E32 which looked like the respective B9, B10 or B11 without engine work. That being said there’s always a strong possibility that an example to contradict that logic will probably exist. The E36 B2.5 seems to be a different animal since that was always marketed as a complete single package which included the engine and exhaust work plus the cosmetics going off the brochures which I’ve seen.

My ALPINA literature is no longer easy to get to. I'm sure I have an article or a price list for the E32 3.5 and it mentions engine parts. I only remembered reading it a few years ago because a customer asked me about E32 ALPINAs. However after some recent googling about the B3.5, I'm now doubting myself

I posted a thread many years ago, on here, asking about Sytner builds with or without an ALPINA model number. Had an interesting answer, but am unable to find that thread. I'm sure it mentions the E28 🤷‍♂️. I guess my brain is no longer filled with ALPINA knowledge, but on a plan to avoid a birthday each year
