Car Magazine - February 2021

Post by kith »

Extensive 10 page spread on Alpina the company in this months Car Magazine, well worth a read. It’s particularly interesting as rather than a piece on the glorious history of the company, it focuses on the challenges of the future.

I read this article with interest. It reminded me of our factory visit a few years ago, when Alpina were just launching the E92 B3 Biturbo and they had an Alpina Green II one in the foyer. That's a while back now - 2007, my photos remind me.

The W reg B10 3.3 was mine at the time, number 056. I wonder where it is now?
F31 B3S Touring - No. 183

Before that: E92 D3 Biturbo No.111, and before that, E39 B10 3.3 No 056

I think that it is more complex than that for Alpina. They have a deep and longstanding relationship with BMW which gives them access to cars early in their development cycle and the freedom to develop them the "Buchloe way" with what appears to be quite a degree of freedom in order to maintain the Bovensiepen philosophy - witness the new B3 Touring at a time when BMW are about to launch the M3 Touring. On the surface, these two will compete with each other but the markets will be very different. M3 owners want raw power foremost whilst Alpina owners are more refined ...

What happens below the surface in this relationship is probably far more important. If rumours are to be believed, Alpina contribute significantly to BMW engine development work as this is very much part of the Buchloe specialism. This clearly works very well as a symbiotic relationship and allows Alpina to remain separate to BMW as a corporate entity. If that continues, then it is reasonable to assume that Buchloe will continue to exist, producing cars which are the other side of the "M car coin", whilst BMW continues to gain from their specialisms.
