Alpina Boot Badge Lettering Replacement Process
Alpina Boot Badge Lettering Replacement Process
So still in lockdown and decided to get the D3 totally detailed. A starting point was a wheel refurb and also a look at the chrome elements. The ALPINA boot badge was in very bad shape on the D3 F30 2016 model with chrome coming off being perished. I thought I would share a method of replacing the ALPINA Badge and this would apply to other lettering badges also on the basis of a straight like for like replacement when not undertaking a full respray etc. The replacement was sourced from Sytner Nottingham as an original OEM part. It may have been covered over the years but I thought a refresh on this would be okay as this is a good time to get it looking good for summer and getting it out onto the road at some stage.
Step 1
Clean the Boot area.
Step 2
Using either masking tape or sellotape or a non-aggressive type of tape, place a strip on the baseline of the ALPINA badge and also one on the first "A" at an angle following the line of it.
Step 3
Using Dental floss double wrapped for strength, start the process of easing off the letters starting with the last "A". Keep going until they have all been removed. This will prevent any damage or marking to the paintwork. They will be tough so do not worry about using a sawing motion for the floss.
Step 4
Using 99% rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth remove all residual glue, padding, dirt and bits from the boot lid area.
Step 5
The new ALPINA letters come set in a cardboard frame backed on both sides by a sticky plastic layer. Remove the cardboard and the white backing will leave the clear plastic layer showing the sticky pads exposed. Avoid touching the sticky pads and this stage needs care when removing the cardboard frame.
Step 6
Line up the baseline of the new letters with the top of the tape and also the first "A" angle and apply. Moving from the centre outwords, apply pressure onto the letters individually as you progress to the ends. Revisit each letter and apply more pressure ensuring that the letters are firmly pressed on. Step 7
Using one of the corners start to remove the clear plastic holding each letter as you go. Remove the plastic at a flat 180 degree angle (not 90 degree). Remove the tape from the baseline and the "A" area, clean off the area using a small amount of alcohol spray and a lint free cloth avoiding any ingress into the new pads on the reverse of the letters to avoid dissolving any glue/adhesive.
Step 8
All done

Re: Alpina Boot Badge Replacement Process
Nice to see the correct method being used and dental floss is a good shout and likely better than fishing line I have seen suggested elsewhere.
After this lockdown one positive is there will be a lot of shiny detailed cars around!

Re: Alpina Boot Badge Lettering Replacement Process
Just done mine following Richard guide and some previous advice from ade flint
Taken years off it but what a pita job overall as I had to cut out a template and cut individual 3M tape to infill my letters
Did appear to be the original letters that I took off
Today was precision, steady fingers and a bit of scoring card with scissors and Stanley knife to cut out like being back at school in art class
Very pleased especially with the recent bmw badges . Had these badges for nearly 2 years so decided it was time to sort it
