Keyless Entry Thefts
Keyless Entry Thefts
Did anyone see 'The One Show' last night in which they covered the rise in thefts of cars with keyless entry, it transpires that as long as they can get a signal from your key by lacing a device near your window they can drive of with car!
Is there a way to avoid this happening?

It's been brewing for a while.
Three steps you can take:
1. Don't keep the car key by the front door. As this is where most put their keys the signal is grabbed easily. Put the keys somewhere central in the house.
2. Buy a metal storage box to store keys.
3. Have Comfort Access coded out of your car by dealership. I've asked mine and they were suitably stumped, so I'm going to ask them to contact BMW UK and seek advice. Maybe this TV programme will help make this happen!

Disabling CA has been mentioned on a number of coding forums and the simple answer has been 'before looking at coding, check your fuse chart'.Metrics wrote:3. It appears that, for most chassis, there is a dedicated fuse for the comfort access system, just locate and remove - this gives you an easily-reversible way of disabling CA

My keys are in the hallway but in large metal unit, would this be sufficient? I think I also heard them saying something about a 5 metre distance between your keys and the car, not much use unless I keep them in the garden!Metrics wrote:It's been brewing for a while.

Avatar, I'd find somewhere central within the house that's a good distance from the front door.
These scrotes use their device by hovering it in the front door vicinity, expecting the key to be close to it on the inside.

I'm glad my oldish tech Alpina is comfort access free, thinking of an obd lock though. Our new Range Rover has it though. I have already been stranded in it after dropping the wife off before going on to another place only to find when I parked up she had the key in her handbag! Stupid system, if the engine was kept running I would've been ok but I turned the engine off so was then stranded and couldn't even lock the car when I went to get the key back from her!

A cheap easy solution to this would be to line a cardboard box (lid too) with tin foil and make your own Faraday cage. Then leave your keys in there.
One good test I am told is to put your cell phone inside your makeshift Faraday cage and call it, if you hear ringing from the cell inside, it isn’t properly sealed or thick enough. Tin foil that is….

Uses the cars canbus system to set up an immobiliser!
It is programmed to allow the car only to start if you press the cars built in switch gear in a given order, decided by you.
I have not read it all so not 100% familiar with it......what do you think?

Here in the Netherlands it's mandatory to have an alarm system installed that forms a second independent barrier to unlock the car.
It means I have an extra small box on my car key ring that is needed before the car can be started or the can bus can be accessed.
With this your key cannot be cloned or the car can't be told through the OBD2 port to unlock the car, it simply won't respond..
Cobra 4627 and Defa DVS90 only have this functionality, the rest basicallly sux
Cheers,
Adwo
