What a spec!! 😎

This was Sytners demonstrator and was used in many a magazines test runs, hope it was treated more kindly than "Clarkson's" B5.
Surprising that they were happy for motoring journalists to be let loose in the most expensive D5S.

Not surprised! Lovely looking car. I wish they had done this model D5 touring in the UK. I need something bigger than my F31 so a B5 would be great but doing 35k miles a year I really could do with a diesel.

Is the touring only available as a D5S?

Sorry. I hadn’t realised a RHD UK G31 D5 existed. Just read up and it’s seems like it does. Never seen one for sale or reviewed and just presumed for some reason they hadn’t sold them over here. Anyone have any idea of rough numbers in the UK?

I am pretty sure they did not bring a G31 D5 touring to the UK market at all. So your choice would be to drop back to a F11 D5 or go benzine in a G31.

Thanks Frosty. Interesting!! Really couldn’t work out if they made it over to the UK or not. Or maybe a LHD 🤔

They didn't, wanted one but they were not imported so went B5 instead.
Apparently the 4th Turbo charger gets in the way of the steering gear on RHD cars.
I believe our RHD version of the D5 G30 makes less power than LHD version being a turbo short.
IIRC there was some concerns about the number that would sell in the UK due to the G31 being heavier and the subsequent performance penalty.
Guess the risk wasn't worth Alpine's while. Shame really, brilliant power plant.

The LHD only D5S touring actually a triple turbo making 408 hp and 800nm - same torque as the B5 - the saloon only RHD twin turbo makes 347hp and 730nm.
The twin turbo has abundant torque for daily use, I never felt short changed compared to the B5 unless really pushing on. Shame they didn’t make a twin turbo touring but apparently F11 sales didn’t justify a G31.
I am getting quite attached to my temporary S6 Avant - it has taken me a while to adjust how I drive due to the comparative lack of torque (550nm) but even with 450bhp it needs working harder to make equivalent progress which is fine by me as it sounds lovely.

Now with James at Evolution - he is a good egg - such a lovely car and I think a reasonable price too.

Bear in mind that early D5S (like this example) had 322hp. Later cars moved up to 347hp

Good point - they also had 700nm rather than 730nm. But the weight also jumped from 1870kg to 2020kg with the LCI, presumably due to the mild hybrid gubbins which provides some of the extra power.
There were three years between my two but the only performance difference I noticed was the LCI had no initial hesitation from standstill and the stop start was noticeably smoother, both gains down to the lardy mild hybrid.
