G31 B5 values

Post by Lizard Lounger » Wed Mar 01, 2023 3:43 pm

No pictures yet but this seems quite a ‘robust’ price for a 2018 model (#263)

https://jzmporsche.com/cars/bmw-alpina-b5-p0470/

It will be interesting to see if it sells for this. Top555 sold a similar vehicle (#552) for £91k recently (it sold quickly so presumably sold for its asking price or as near as damn it).

I guess new and used car price inflation means that if you bought just before prices went bonkers then depreciation has been virtually negligible. These are retail prices of course, but even so.

Interesting to see these 2 come up for sale as you say Jason. Suspect this 2018 example's pricing will be reflective of the Top555 car selling so quickly.
I think your point on values is accurate, as the LCI B5s have gone up significantly in price as new vehicles, so this will impact the second hand cars as supply will be always been limited and they are a sought after package.

I've always been surprised on how well the Audi RS6 holds it value - certainly compared with the contemporary M5, which of course is saloon only. It appears the market for these uber V8 wagons remains strong.

I really like the G31, but struggle to see it at £30k more than a G30 of the same age.

Suspect G30 B5 saloon values are influenced quite a lot by M5 values, which appear to be dropping quite significantly.

#263 has been reserved so that didn’t take long (assuming it sells). #340 was very high spec and £75000 in Dec 2020 (2019 (68) 26k - £90000 is a big difference for a car that is a year older anyway and now 2 years later albeit with 10k less miles).I am not sure how long these high prices will last, but they’ve lasted longer than I thought they would.
When I bought #340 the difference at the time with the saloons was around £5k. If it had been much more I would have found a saloon without hesitation.
The B5 touring is the absolute top of any car tree for me, but the saloon is only a twig down - there are small advantages to the saloons too that I have noticed - less road noise inside (in spite of 295 instead of 285 tyres), slightly better ride at the rear (in spite of air suspension - I think it’s air suspension at the rear on the touring) and boot security may be important to some - not me - (none of which would make a jot of difference when buying compared to the price).
I also think the LCI saloon is ageing very well too, but that’s just my D5s bias!
The M5 prices will always be lurking for comparison, and there are some pretty tempting prices out there given the performance but, to me, they really aren’t direct rivals if you “get” the Alpina difference for daily driving.

Sorry Metrics, that may read as though I mean you don’t “get” the difference - I mean non Alpina drivers looking at both!

Personally, I believe that B5 values, Touring versions in particular, will remain relatively strong for some time. Apart from being a fabulous car they are quite rare (unlike an M5 or its Audi and MB competitors). On top of this, it is no longer possible to configure a new ‘standard’ B5. I expect BMW will be re-tooling its factory soon for the new 5 series. And will they produce an ALPINA version? As I understood it, BMW are looking to push the ALPINA brand further upmarket where it will be more luxurious and less performance focused; a different beast, entirely.

Interesting discussion this, a cars worth / perceived value vs what someone will pay for it.
I’m seriously toying with the idea of replacing Brunhilda with something newer purely because the miles keep rising.

If I can be persuaded it would/will be a LCI B5 Touring, ideally sub 20K miles, in a lighter colour.

My car has wanted for nothing, intermediate oil changes, frequent VHC checks and code reads, tracking, tyres, filters etc, etc. Drivers seat under custom leather cover, cheepo drivers floor mat to preserve Alpina original. Therefore maintenance, no expense spared, interior unmarked.
Exterior wise, it has rash around the nose commensurate with the mileage and a scratch on the wheel arch. Partial repaint of the nose, fix scratch, full interior/exterior detail and the car is back to showroom for a lot less than 10% of its worth.

I was very disappointed with the trade in value suggested to me this weekend. The killer factors were: pre LCI model, mileage and no full Sytner history on the iDrive. (The car hasn’t been to Sytner for simple things like oils and filters, I use an indy BMW specialist for convenience, all BMW original stuff used and receipted). The optional equipment level of mine is higher than that of the car I looked at and in my particular case the engines have similar miles. The car offered will very shortly be out of BMW factory warranty too.
Ok, the LCI does benefit from the OS7 with android auto, the display panel is fractionally wider and exterior wise it is aesthetically sharper. It has an extra 10 or so hp, the gear mapping is slightly revised but that’s about it I believe. Asking price of the car I looked at? £10K shy of a new un-optioned one pre lockdown. Would I pay it? Perhaps, but only if the price gap were to close significantly, the only way that will happen is if I sell privately. I understand dealers have to make a margin, undertake a lot of prep work, take a risk with warranty etc but even so, are used LCI B5 Touring’s so sought after as to justify minimal annual depreciation?

I don’t think the pre LCI should make much difference judging by how quickly the two at the top of the post have sold.
The non BMW main dealer servicing may be the main issue for Sytner on a car of this value - I would give Nick Koumblis a call at Uber GT - they bought my D5s #009 and then my M5 and are very professional and pro Alpina.
#625 would be a good match for what you are looking for…!

UberGT are down the road from me - very nice people.

@John - well worth trying to market your car privately. These cars are rare and know by so few that in theory you shouldn't get the usual tyre kicker time wasters.
