This does look very special. The colour is really nice and the interior suits it so well. Clearly a cherished car.

Just done a 6 hour round trip to view this car.

Was there for literally 2 or 3 minutes before telling them it was not for me.

Sills rotten on the jacking points, flat battery and top top it all off the seller failed to mention until I got there that the "engine rebuild" transpired to be a used E53 X5 4.6iS block modified to fit and used the Alpina heads. All done kerb side by the owners dad.

Didn't even hear it run.

Ffs Barry sorry for the wasted trip but good intel for anyone who was interested
Sounds like a chancer it’s a big thing and often a good selling point that engine work has been done so why not mention it

Whats wrong with that?
AFAIK it was Alpina that gave the block to BMW for them to use in the X5 same with the 4.8 used in the X5iS but that is totally different to the 4.8 used in the E60 550 etc etc

Whats wrong with it is that they did not disclose that it had a block replacement before i made the trip. That and it now not being a matching numbers car, not having Alpina pistons (they are different to the X5 4.6 ones) plus god only knows what level and care they took when doing the work in the carpark outside their house.

You are correct, BMW used a variation of the M62tuB56 in the E53 X5 4.6iS but the X53 X5 4.8iS did not used the Alpina M62tuB48 as used in the E39 V8S, it used the N62B48 from the E6x 550i/650i/750i.

Ah sorry I didn't realise they hadn't told you about the engine before you went to view.
Thats shite especially before a 6 hr round trip

And thanks for the clarification about the N62 in the X5 4.8iS
I had been led to believe that the X5 E53 used the Alpina blocks in the 4.6 and 4.8

Where does it leave this red Alpina then
With an engine rebuild with half BMW and half Alpina and no mahl pistons is it still a B10 V8? albeit with lost provenance

Its a devalued non matching numbers B10 that is a rusty can of worms.

It’s still a fantastic looking car with a great interior. If the price was right considering the work that has taken place, it could still be a really nice car for someone. The Alpina suspension wizardry is the stand out for me, so as long as that remains intact, with a characterful V8, it will still be a great drive.

Well, I guess that’s the other side of the coin! If the rust is that bad, it’s not such an enticing prospect.

At 180k miles i doubt its on its original Alpina suspension.

It is a stunning colour combo and nicely specced B10, just a shame its been slowed to get in to a poor state.

Mt brief look at it also spotted a damaged OSF wing and all wheels required a refurb,
