Thinking of selling me e91 alpina d3 touring…

Post by Kemppidgeon » Mon Nov 08, 2021 3:50 pm

Hey guys, thinking of selling my alpina d3 touring and wondered what price you guys thought was fair. Its very tidy and done low mileage for its age, 86,000. Just had a 5 year ceramic coating put on and its looking mint! Interior is immaculate with the only think letting it down is a few age related marks on the wheels and the odd stone chips on the front bumper. I was thinking i could get 8k for it as the very few that i have seen for sale have 50k more miles and selling for 9k! Be good to hear some opinions.

E91 D3 #129

Post by Bob » Mon Nov 08, 2021 4:52 pm

From what I've seen the market for E9x D3's is a tricky one, many struggle to see it as anything beyond a base spec 320d and as soon as you add in lower mileage and a potential premium valuation, your pool of buyers shrinks rapidly. Look on AT, the sub-100k pre-LCI Touring 320d's are in the £4.5-6k range. Your challenge is finding that buyer who appreciates the ALPINA-ness and is prepared to pay a premium for it.

There is only one other E91 D3 with sub-100k mileage for sale that I know of and it is fairly heavily modified and is asking £12.5k.
D3 TOURING [E91] #221 354 - Titanium Silver/FFAT - Anthracite Citrus Cloth/Leather; 2007_57; £12.5k; 83k; Private

There has also been one other which has been offered on a few of the FB groups but not seriously marketed and was asking £8.7k on 83k last time it was formally up, early this year.

The couple that I know actually sold were much higher mileage and last advertised at £2.5k with 226k miles and £4.75k with 166k. There was also one auctioned on eBay in Jun-21 with 107k and starting bid of £6k. That got no bids.

I presume the £9k car you mention is this one. That dealer has had it since May-21 when it started at £10k. Previous to that, it was Privately advertised and dropped to £6.2k before it disappeared and re-surfaced with the dealer.

Hope that helps.

Really appreciate your reply, and completely agree and understand what you are saying. It’s difficult because i no what the car is worth, but like you said its a small market for the people who look past just a standard 320d. I am in no rush to sell and wont be letting her go for less than i think she is worth, but dont want to take the piss by any means which is why i wanted to know peoples thoughts! Cheers again for the quick reply

If you do intend to sell, I would strongly suggest writing a full and detailed advert description, take some decent well lit photos and post it to PH, AT or eBay. So many of the D3's you see advertised have a crappy one line description, photos taken in the dark on a potato-cam, Marketplace/Gumtree advert which does little to give you confidence in the car's owner or history.

I tend to look at it that typically an Alpina costs 25% more than the car it's based on when new and it seems sensible that this should still be the case when buying 2nd hand. So based on Bob's guide of £4.5k - £6k for a regular 320D that would put yours in the region of £5.6k - £7.5K.

So your idea of £8k doesn't seem too unreasonable, but given the small pool of potential buyers (who may also be considering the equivalent 330D) you will probably need to be flexible.

The other option is to part ex it with a dealer for your new car. Then your focus moves to cost to change rather than the value you are getting on your pride and joy.

That might make it both easier & quicker to “sell”.

But James G is about right on the values, and it will take time to sell 3-9 months would be my guess.

Only problem with the part ex is they will most likely offer me something silly like £3000 so i would just be losing more money doing it that way. But yes i also agree with james G, think 7-7.5k is a good asking price

Probably ask more if all the doors were the same shade of silver....

To the OP:- try motorway.co.uk for a value (I input your reg and it did recognise the car) as they're competitive and offer slightly more than webuyanycar (another route worth trying). I used both to get 'values' for the Cayman GTS (quite niche) we last sold and they were very close to each other and matched what I sold it for, so they were a good guide. However, I doubt you'll see anything close to what you'd like for it.

Good luck :D

But that’s the point, they could offer you £1k for yours and in doing so knock £6.5k of the list price of their car in exchange. Thus “valuing” your car at £7.5k

The value of your car is then irrelevant - it’s the value of the car you are buying and therefore your “cost to change” which is the most important. That’s what I would be thinking about - what is my target cost to change! 😀

Do you have interior pics/specs?

If it has leather, climate control, ProNav and/or an upgraded sound system then I'd say ~£7kish was fair. If it's half leather, manual ac, no nav and has the 'business' sound system, I think you'll struggle.

As someone that really really wants to get into an Alpina, a diesel dog wagon makes the most sense, I am however having difficulty as the prices are all over the place.

I'm finding it hard to justify the asking prices for some D3 Tourings even though I 'get' Alpinas, because so often they're essentially poverty spec, whereas the money will get you into either a fully optioned 320d Touring, or a well optioned 330d touring. This seems to be less of an issue with the BiTurbos and in all honesty, that's what I'm looking towards. Just remember that £10k will get you into an F30 330d Touring and it's only a matter of waiting for spec/condition/mileage at that point as they're a far less rare car.

I will get you some pics of the interior if you want to look. But its half leather seats, full climate control with the business sound system. I think i would happily take 7k for her tbh but not much less really as its very tidy, has to be seen in person to be appreciated. I got extended gold warranty when i brought the car also which has got just under 2 years left for someones piece of mind.
