And I’ve also decided to return the car to no-stripes, clear indicators all round
This I imagine is the big problem for many, the deko kit as fitted is just so wrong on so many levels for an e46 B3 that it distracts the majority from what the car is. If you removed those and returned it to std and say readvertised it again in a few weeks it'll go quickly I'm sure. I'd say it was the main reason its not been sold (that and the current depressed market).

So I’ve just had a long conversation with Collecting Cars about listing my car. They’re after thorough information and approx 100-200 pictures of the car. We discussed values, reserves etc, and we seem to be on the same wavelength. And I’ve also decided to return the car to no-stripes, clear indicators all round. I’m trying to source a silver front decal in time now.

I’m still open to offers on it as ideally I’d prefer to sell to a forum member.
It's now coming soon on CC:

E46 B3 3.3 Touring #089

Post by Bob » Thu Mar 11, 2021 3:52 pm

Hopefully someone will take this on and sort everything out. Looks like it could turn into quite a project.

It did some serious mileage early on in its life: 30k miles between Sep-02 & Mar-03. That's an average of 150+miles per day for 6mths!

I have looked at this a few times and it needs a lot of work to get it right I think. For the right price/person to sort should be a lovely car. As Charles has shown , looked after the car will go for many miles but needs looking after.

If anybody would like to view the car, obviously observing shielding they’d be more than welcome. Reality is often different to armchair critics, however opinion is completely subjective.

Yes. I’m in regular contact with CC, they’ve been great so far with advice on market values, information to include, etc. I may remove the reserve.

Ultimately though it’s an auction. Just bid what you feel it’s worth if you want to.

well my current car is up for either hand back or pay the balance, so I'm at a crossroads as to what I can do, but I'm thinking its going to be too much come end of auction. I don't mind having/doing any work needed though, over a long term thats doable.

ouch indeed, but in these suppressed times, thats obviously how the market feels this is valued. High miles, tatty on the edges e46 B3 touring.

Trouble is, are 'we' as owners and enthusiasts over valuing our cars today?

I would have gone to £5k to be honest.

It’s an odd time for auction values. Collecting cars is very strong for Porsche’s and defenders and big ticket items I.e 50k +. Edward Lovett has said before that the type of person that uses the platform normally doesn’t log on to look for specific cars but more browse and see what they fancy. The market for this is small and I’m not sure CC will reach to all of them, and I think it’s still worth more than the what the auction ended at. B10 3.3 touring #47 has recently sold for more than double this and I wouldn’t say they’re worlds apart. Obviously E39 & E46 pricing is different but it’s not half.

@asp did CC try to do a deal between you and the highest bidder?

Isn't #47 a saloon? Anyhow they're not worlds apart but they are aimed at a different market really due to size etc but saying that they obviously do have parallels.

There's a few e39's sitting at £8k at the moment and not moving yet dependent on condition some sell for much higher figures, however the point I was trying to put across was, we see our cars as perhaps something they are not to someone who is looking at these from the outside. So (and no disrespect intended to the OP with the B3) a car that's in need, with high miles, and generally tatty in various areas, then anything over £5k is probably seen as excessive, as a comparison, you have that B3S touring in grey that sold a while back via CC for over double this price and that was exceptional to look at yet struggled to sell originally at over the final selling figure. So question is, is this B3 worth £5k as it stands, but with a few grand spending on it could it be worth £9k plus?

Part of me thinks the figure achieved is near the ceiling as it stands regardless of the platform is put on.

Ebay is a hard judge, pistonheads was met with some cutting comments and here it didn't reach its resreve, so what would be next? Online auction across the block say at Anglia classic car auction, chances are it'll hit a similar figure.
