B10 3.3 touring #47 has recently sold for more than double this and I wouldn’t say they’re worlds apart
Isn't #47 a saloon? Anyhow they're not worlds apart but they are aimed at a different market really due to size etc but saying that they obviously do have parallels.
E39 LCI B10 3.3 TOURING #047 was discussed here.

There's a few e39's sitting at £8k at the moment and not moving yet dependent on condition some sell for much higher figures, however the point I was trying to put across was, we see our cars as perhaps something they are not to someone who is looking at these from the outside. So (and no disrespect intended to the OP with the B3) a car that's in need, with high miles, and generally tatty in various areas, then anything over £5k is probably seen as excessive, as a comparison, you have that B3S touring in grey that sold a while back via CC for over double this price and that was exceptional to look at yet struggled to sell originally at over the final selling figure. So question is, is this B3 worth £5k as it stands, but with a few grand spending on it could it be worth £9k plus?

Part of me thinks the figure achieved is near the ceiling as it stands regardless of the platform is put on.

Ebay is a hard judge, pistonheads was met with some cutting comments and here it didn't reach its resreve, so what would be next? Online auction across the block say at Anglia classic car auction, chances are it'll hit a similar figure.
I appreciate these aren't Tourings but:
B10 3.3 [E39 LCI] #198; 354 - Titanium Silver/N6SW - Black Montana Leather; 2002_02; £6.3k; 145k; eAuction
This is a manual and has just finished another auction on eBay. This is the 3rd time it has been auctioned (2 x eBay & 1 x via Car & Classic) with the first two reaching £7k bid and the latest only £6.3k. From what I've seen this car has been up for sale almost continuously since 2017 and although there have been these auctions, the classified price has predominantly been just under £10k but has ranged between £5-15k.
B3 3.3 [E46] #242; 327 - Santorin Blue II (Sonderlack)/Silver Dekor/Light Grey Buffalo w Blue Piping Leather; 2000_W; £8.5k; 93k; Private
This one has been up for around a month now and is in a more exotic colour combination, moderate mileage and looks to be in reasonable condition but despite the attention, it hasn't flown off the shelf.

AG makes a good point, there certainly appears to be quite a difference in perspective between those who get ALPINA versus those who see them as a base BMW with some trinkets and try to compared with an M Car. Selling an ALPINA is frequently a long-game waiting for that knowing buyer who is searching for that car.

ouch indeed, but in these suppressed times, thats obviously how the market feels this is valued. High miles, tatty on the edges e46 B3 touring.

Trouble is, are 'we' as owners and enthusiasts over valuing our cars today?

I would have gone to £5k to be honest.
We mustn't forget that the minimum buyer's fee for a purchase via CC is £600 so in effect somebody would have been paying £5,200 for the car.

Without wishing to sully the conversation but what would a similar mileage E46 330i auto Touring get? £2k at most? I've always felt that Alpinas deserve to command the same premium over the equivalent BMW model when 2nd hand as they do when new which feels like 25 - 50% depending on spec and so on. Against that criteria, I think the final bid price was pretty good.

IMVHO it is all a matter of timing. It took me a coupole of years to get my B3 3.3 Touring
Alpinas are a niche enough market then out of those buyers how many actually want a Touring?
I thought you would get the £8k for it with relative ease, The market is always shite early in the year It will pick up in April.
I've been holding off selling my B3 Biturbo until now Just sat on it for the past 6 months as I knew it wouldn't shift in the winter/early spring.

@asp did CC try to do a deal between you and the highest bidder?
I was in message (email/phone) quite a lot in the last 2 days of the auction ending, however I didn’t hear a thing from them afterwards. To be realistic, I didn’t expect them to. They’re clearly trying to cater to the Singer’s/Senna’s/etc they’re now selling, they’re a small team and their working resource is finite. They stand to make more from promoting a healthy trade from that end of the market than sub-£10k metal.

Same here to get this one. Yep Alpina Tourings appeal to a small group yet those who really want them appreciate them, there’s just not many out there! It’s naive of me to expect it’ll sell quick, it’s frustrating as I keep seeing cars I want to purchase, and missing them. But it’s a proper first world problem for it to take a while to sell your Alpina. In a pandemic.

A few people have messaged me from FB, PH & IG expressing interest in it. The issue most had (very reasonably) is they wanted to see and test drive it. Right now that’s not allowed, and I imagine the used car market will really pick up again once restrictions lift.

Update on my B3:

I’ve been having conversations with AG about purchasing my B3, however his situation has changed and is unable at the moment to proceed with it. I’m not in a rush to sell, but as stated before I’m keen to try something different.

The reserve set with Collecting Cars was set at £7000, any reasonable offers would be considered.

Also, viewings are getting a little easier to facilitate now, and when further restrictions lift and I’ve still got the car, I’ll probably re-list it.

I’m not sure how long the photographs on CC will remain available so I’ll work out how to share them somehow.

It looks much better without those wide stripes. Even better if it had silver on the front spoiler instead of the gold.
I am very tempted, but having the E36 wagon already in Orient blue it may not be a good idea. Maybe I will have to have a chat with myself as I am looking for a replacement daily for my current car.
