Winter conditions, driving an Alpina or any car!

Post by thomas v8 » Tue Nov 30, 2010 6:18 pm

Had the benifit of having the day off today. Which i must say i'm delighted about :)

The snow fall we have had now is coming onto about 10-11" and there are people stuck in cars everywhere. Where are these so called gritting trucks  Where i live there is a steep hill and there have been many cars stranded there today, its crazy. I expect many the cars are running the wrong tyres but it does seem crazy, this country gets caught out every time we a some snow albeit heavy bout of snow.
Two cars have been abandoned one being a Eclass Merc the otther yeah the good old BMW.

I have orderd a set of winter tyres and looking at whts gone on today they cant come quick enough. I hope i manage to get to work in the moring when i leave at 5.30 AM  . will post on the outcome tomorrow eve.

Just thought I would share my views on the winter that has hit the town i live in!

Be good to hear other members experiances.

Boy am I glad I invested in M&S tyres for the D3 and X5. We have had a cumulative 8 or 9 inches in the last 5 days or so with very little melt and and it's hammering down again just now. I have cleared my drive and my neighbour's drive three times and I'm going to have to do it again when this stops. The D3 hasn't been out but the X5 is a revelation on the Winters........turns it from a bit of a joke 4x4 into a seriously capable one.

Could not get the touring off the drive this morning at 5. 30 am, What a joke to cut a long story short I just went back indoors and phoned in work and explained. Waiting in as planned, i didn't expect Elitedirect to phone and tell me the winter tyres had arrived :D . straight away i decided to dig out the touring and head over to Rainham. Got the car out in the end with the traction turned off and fair hepling of throttle  . Anyway i cant praise the M/S tyres enough i would never believe the difference its simply amazing. So happy I deciced to buy the winter tyres. Only snag if I can find one is the price was a little different to what i first thought. originaly thought £390 but this was not the case it came to £460 fitted and balanced but very well worth it. I can only recommend to other forum members to invest in some winter tyres, you will not be dissapointed believe me. One very happy camper. Didn't get the car home and her indoors has taken it off me to go out and about :( .

Tyres: Cooper Weahter-master snow tyre 225/55. R16 on Turbines. £460.00 fitted.

That's why we don't have any! Where we live it just about never snows (cameras come out if it does!), and if we're in doubt about the weather further afield, we take the Mini out with its new (summer) tyres on...it copes! Alternatively....take the bus.

Last year, during all that weather, it snowed one morning so you could leave footprints...it was thawed by lunchtime 8) . That was it...but it was cooooooooold. We moved house and it was -15C at midday the day we moved. Took us a month to warm the house back up

ROFL!

Don't envy you boys, one bit. Take it easy, and drive as safe as all the other road users let you!

All better now though :D

Now I've remembered how to drive an auto.......properly  :D
PMSL, hope the leather's fine! My only experience of driving autos in snow was interesting...
1) Ohio, -15C, 2ft of snow, yank barge with many, many coffee cup holders. I didn't give a crap as it wasn't mine and there's not much to hit in Ohio....so had a bit of a larf on summer tyres!
2) Mid Canada, -35C, 2metres+ of snow another yank barge, but slightly better! Still lots of coffee cup holders (I used many!), car left plugged into the mains or running all night to prevent the block freezing. Tyres keep the flat spots as they're so cold, so journey very bumpy and not on snow tyres :P and lots of things to hit and ditches to go into. At least the rivers were frozen solid so no danger there! Was lethal! Trans-Canada highway in driving snow, -20C and hoping it was as straight as the map suggested....otherwise the white stuff might have not had road under it....

In both cases, ABS had lots of use

Drove home in a hired Ford Focus last night/this morning from Heathrow, via Rochdale, where i picked up a set of 16" winter wheels + tyres
Most of the roads were good, and saw plenty of snow ploughs.
The only idiots were the usual white vans.
East coast of Scotland was the worst, especially around the Dundee area.

Fitted the winter wheels/tyres to the D3 tonight, and can't wait to see the difference tomorrow

Onzie
