contravention code 99

Post by vblanche » Thu Nov 04, 2010 9:08 pm

Hi,

received today a penalty charge of £50 for contravention code 99 (stopping on zigzag). didn't know about this code...

I just stopped before a pedestrian cross to drop a friend and went, literally stopped 10 sec, and i'm getting a penalty charge...that's ridiculous.

can I appeal?

thanks

Bugger! Must have been caught on automatic camera...doubtful an appeal would work IMO. Maybe someone else has experience of this, however you can't stop on a zigzag, unfortunately.

Parking on a zig-zag is an offence which attracts not just a fine but 3 points on your licence. For good reason; if vehicles are parked there, they obscure the view of pedestrians waiting to cross.

Be grateful you have been given a fixed penalty only because if you appeal and it goes to court, you may get points too.

we were just stopping, not parking. on the photo, you can see the car just on the side of the road, stop lights on and my friend leaving the car. I agree with "not parking on zigzag", but stopping? if someone was coming behind us, I believe this person should not try to pass us (therefore avoid to hustle or worst any pedestrian)...
anyway, lesson taken...

Stopping and parking are the same thing - if you're not in a traffic jam or waiting at red lights, then I don't think any distinction is made.

Best of luck if you do appeal, but for the sake of £50 I would really advise you not to become a test case on the point at which stopping becomes parking!

'Stopping' is the main word here...you can't do it on a zigzag, for obvious reasons. I agree that it could become costly to appeal.....Also worth remembering these camera are installed on box junctions, too, now, as well as bus and taxi lanes. Can be costly just popping into town
