D3 Bi Turbo Maintenance DIY

Post by shaziman » Fri Apr 29, 2022 5:42 pm

Hi All,

I am starting this thread as a repository for all info that i come across as part of my journey with the D3BT.

For reference, my car is a 2011 E92 D3 Bi Turbo Coupe, i will reference as much general info as i can, but please bear this in mind. I will post separate posts for each topic as i come round it and edit as i go along.

Enjoy!

N.B. I cannot be held responsible for info on this thread or any errors that may occur. Also, any info you take from here and then use on your own car is at your own risk.

Brakes

Front:

The D3 BT uses a 330mm x 24mm Front Disc. This set up comes from the 325d/330d.
Standard 320d uses 312mm x 24mm disc set up.

BMW Part Numbers:

330mm Front Disc: 3416854999
Callipers: LH: 34116709093
RH: 34116709094
Carriers: Both sides: 34116769097

For reference to make sure you don't use these parts:
320d 312mm x 24mm Setup:
Discs: 34116855006
Callipers: LH: 34116778145
RH: 34116778146
Carriers: Both Sides: 34116778147

335d 348mm x 24mm Setup: (could be an optional upgrade if you so wish)
Discs: 34116855000
Callipers: LH: 34116773201
RH: 34116773202
Carriers: Both Sides: 34116773203

Rear

The D3 BT uses a 336mm x 22mm Front Disc. This set up comes from the 325d/330d.
Standard 320d uses 300mm x 22mm disc set up.

BMW Part Numbers:

336mm Front Disc: 34216855004
Callipers: LH: 34216769101
RH: 34216769102
Carriers: Both sides: 34216769104

For reference to make sure you don't use these parts:
320d 300mm x 22mm Setup:
Discs: 34216855007
Callipers: LH: 34216768697
RH: 34216768698
Carriers: Both Sides: 34216768696

No real upgrades available here, as 330d/335d etc all use the same size as fitted to the D3 BT.

Tips: Whilst inside the wheel arch changing brakes, please check the following preventative maintenance items:
Front: LHS: Check the Xenon light height adjuster, this is housed near the anti-rollbar mounting point. Check that it is free and that the ball joints at either end of the plastic arm are free. If not, then slowly remove the ball joints after applying several cycles of penetrating fluid and then clean up the balls and refit. This gives feedback to the lights to adjust your dipped beam position.
Rear: LHS: Check the Headlight vertical aim control sensor, this is housed on the lower arm and bolts to the chassis. Check that it is free and that the ball joints at either end of the plastic arm are free. If not, then slowly remove the ball joints after applying several cycles of penetrating fluid and then clean up the balls and refit. This gives feedback to the lights to adjust your dipped beam position based on boot loading.

Oil Changes and filters

We are not discussing oil grades here!

Oil filter removal tool:
You need a 76mm 14 flute oil filter removal tool. There are many, but i found this was easily available:

These are not the best, if the housing has been overtightened, then as you force your way to get the cap off, the tool may distort and you wont get it off again, and wont be able to use it again. Lucky for me, this wasn't the case and as i am torqueing it back up, this tool will suffice. If your not sure, or you don't trust yourself, then buy the cast aluminium one like the official BMW tool from eBay or such like and this will last.

OK, so the engine is from the 123d, so the correct filters are:

Oil: MANN HU721/5x ------------ BMW Part Number: 11427807177
Air: MANN C30135 ------------ BMW Part Number: 13717797465
Cabin: MANN CUK 8430 ------------ BMW Part Number: 64316803970 (fine dust or normal to you and me)
Cabin: MANN FP 8430 ------------ BMW Part Number: 64319313519 (activated charcoal)

Wheel Alignment

NOTE: Hunter Spec is for COUPE only.

So, you will need to find someone with a Hunter Hawkeye DSP600 (200 and 400 also fine) that will be able to pull up the specs from the Hunter database.

Machine looks like this:

IMG_20220504_150850.jpg (2.38 MiB) Viewed 171 times
Although, you will need to tell them that the toe adjustment for both front and rear are wrong to Alpina spec, as shown in the supplementary handbook.

***Supplementary handbook picture to follow***

NOTE: 68kg on both front seats and 14kg in the boot, full tank of fuel. Most places forget this step, they will get arsey, but stand your ground!

This is the spec from the Hunter Hawkeye:

I have highlighted here the toe figures for both front and rear, these are incorrect.

The supplementary handbook for Front shows:
10 degrees +/- 8 minutes, therefore Range is 9 degrees 52 minutes to 10 degrees 8 minutes
Hunter Hawkeye:
5 degrees +/- 4 minutes, therefore Range is 4 degrees 56 minutes to 5 degrees 4 minutes

As you can see, there is no overlap on this, so they need to be able to set this correctly. If they can't, then they should leave it and do all the rest and then you should go and get this done at a normal common toe only adjustment place, but they work in mm so these figures will need converting.

As a guide, the costs would be something like this:
