Seat Protectors

Post by Grumpyjohn1957 » Fri Apr 09, 2021 11:26 pm

My G31 B5 is wonderfully upholstered in cream leather (Smoke white Dakota? I think) which unfortunately is not really a John colour!
As I’m the sole occupant most days and spend a lot of time on the road it’s obvious the driver’s seat is going to get hammered.
Furthermore, having a “real job” one cannot always guarantee to be clean or changed 100% of the time, I really can make a mess.

Alas, after only 8 weeks of ownership grime began to make an appearance which prompted a search for seat covers. Having spent several hours trawling eBay and Amazon I managed to find a textile vest that was "guaranteed to fit" 5 series comfort seats and so duly purchased a set.

Sock and chickens lip springs to mind but for £15 I suppose they were better than the Transit Van type coverall things offered by the majority of vendors. (When they flap and touch the seat control buttons, they send the iDrive crazy)

Eventually, frustrated by ill-fitting and the tendency to induce betty swallocks (virtue of being polyester) I bit the bullet and acquired a sheet of raw undyed leather. I then persuaded a local car upholstery refurbisher/custom trimmer to knock up a cover.

In fairness, I allowed the poor chap the car for 5 hours, by the roadside to boot. (he really wanted the seat out and in his workshop)
I’m dead chuffed with the result.
The cover is in two tailored parts, backrest & seat, held down either by tucking in or velcro straps.
Easy and quick to remove for high days and holidays, breathable, thin enough for the heating, massage and adjustments to work (not the ventilation though) firm and grippy enough for those tight sweeping S bends.

I suppose this one could be regarded as a prototype but for a first attempt I think its bloody brilliant!

Anyone else had a similar experience with seat covers or come up with a method of protecting the chair?

That looks like a good solution John. If it's real leather, you could have the opportunity to get some Ivory White dye to bring the colour match a bit closer?
