E46 B3S Japan Red #94

Post by hashluck » Sat Oct 31, 2020 11:18 am

I need to do a write up and catalogue the work done (mostly at BMR Performance) and my experiences with the E46 B3S so far, but for now some pictures to share. To recap, this is No. 94, one of 35 UK B3S Coupes and the only one world-wide specified in Japan Red which, as good as it looked, I felt deserved a refresh and above all some good protection if I was going to use it a daily more often than not. I chose Feynlab for the final coating expertly applied by https://www.facebook.com/Detailmycar

The results are pretty good. I had the car fully rust-proofed prior also; the car had a pampered sub 40K mile life prior (having been previously re-commissioned post a storage period by James Elliot - who was super helpful prior to my subsequent purchase of the car) and been Waxoyled twice in that time so my efforts were again preventative rather than after the horse had bolted. Zero rust apparent and now protected and ready for use.

That looks stunning. 8)

I’m interested to know how well these self-healing coatings perform over their expected life time.

I enjoy doing my own detailing but this is the perfect argument for getting a pro to do the work. The finish is mesmerising. Lovely looking motor.

Really stunning finish and I have often wondered why there is not more Japan Red Alpinas. I was tempted some years ago by a B10 in the same colour.

That is simply stunning Hashluck, looks utterly perfect to me - will you really daily drive it?

Maybe get some decals on the sides? You're local to Simon Alcon and he's the absolute guru on getting them striped up 8)

Thanks Bob

I have some real-life experience of Feynlab having had it applied to an E60 5-Series previously and we did a wire brush test on it (simulating the worst possible swirl making car wash experience on the paintwork - a pretty scary demo) and then poured very hot water on the resultant marks and they disappeared. About a year on I also had a baked on bird poo with the typical resultant etch marking. After removal an application of a hair dryer to the mark also saw this just seemingly melt away. Very impressive. It is not cheap compared to other ceramic coatings (but it is better at this level and type of protection) but it is not as expensive as Paint Protection Film (but nor will it protect as well though there are other pros and cons to PPF).

Thanks Metrics, a few more little jobs to do and then that is the plan, though I do have history buying cars with the intention of using it as a daily and then once I have prepared them deciding they are just too good. This means I do have other cars to use and can spread the love/risk.

As for decals, I do like to leave my cars as originally specified and I think decals may be too much on the Japan Red (other colour schemes I would be very happy to have them). One of the few previous owners of this car applied the gold lettering to the front splitter and I was in two minds on whether to leave it, finally deciding I would.
