Paint touch up

Post by Aggie » Sat Oct 10, 2020 10:28 am

Morning all.

I've been having a good look around my car and need to address some stone chips and an annoying scratch on the drivers door underneath the wing mirror. As they are small areas, a full panel respray seems a bit excessive. I know of these companies like chip away are out there but I've never dealt with them.

Does anyone have any experience with these companies? We're you pleased with the results? I'm sceptical to be honest. I'd love to hear the thoughts and opinions of anyone who has used such companies and any recommendations. I live in Gosport, Hampshire and am willing to travel if it means getting quality workmanship.

The front bumper is different story, that does need a respray, AGAIN!!!!

My personal opinion is that you can get away with local smart repairs on the corners of bumpers etc but on a panel like a door you’ll struggle to get a decent finish and colour match.

I bought a 2yr old 130i from a main dealer some years back now - when I viewed the car it had a very small mark on one door which I was happy to accept. When I went to collect the car, I found they tried to smart repair it. There was overspray over the glass - it was a terrible job. The sales manager claimed he had been away and so hadn’t authorised the repair. I refused to pick it up and they took it into their body shop to do a proper job. The silver lining was they did a great job in the end - colour match was spot on and it was only in very particular lights that you could see it had been painted.

I’m happy to be corrected if there are other people out there with better experiences, but I’d rather just touch in small stone chips etc. If it does need painting, it needs to be done properly.

Tend to agree. There is no half way measures! Smart repairs over time will show through in my opinion and experience (of having owned cars with quick repairs done on the driveway).
