D3 F30 BiTurbo Sapphire Black Now Detailed

Post by big blue » Wed May 27, 2020 5:24 pm

Obviously a lot of time on our hands so in preparation for summer a complete detailing has been done. The only thing needed maybe is a new set of number plates, some decal replacement, could also polish the inside of the exhaust tips. Alloy wheels refurbished, front valance (jeez I sound old should have called it a front splitter) sprayed from road rash, but overall a decent job on the 2016 facelift version of the F30. No swirl marks which are notorious on Metallic Black paints. A beautiful drive every day of the week and a fantastic piece of engineering.

Lovely job that. I'm a sucker for hoovered carpet stripes too (or should that be 'vacuumed' - I'm old too and nothing wrong with calling it a valance :D )

Thanks Jules, I guess even further back in time we used to call it a "front bumper", but things have progressed a bit over the years. Having looked at the new G20 D3 we have the usage of the word valance for the rear at https://www.alpina-automobiles.com/en/m ... equipment/ so maybe it is back in fashion :D

I like the "front spoiler" term which is very befitting an ALPINA

I think they should rename the boot badges as 'rear spoilers' as they spoil the day of anyone who tries to keep up with an Alpina as that is all they see disappearing into the distance :D

Insides of of the tail pipes now done, I did these myself and they were not done by the detailer. My thoughts on this are that they should look at doing this for the complete detail as part of the package, but it was no problem doing this after the event. I just needed to use the right materials as the chrome element on the outside needs to be retained.

Very nice! What approach did you take to get this result?

I wanted to avoid chemicals as much as possible inside, I have never found an off the shelf Exhaust pipe cleaner fluid that you would just spray on and it magically makes the chrome/stainless "pop" and remove carbon build up. So the approach was:
  • On the inside I used a Spontex Handy Tough Scourer from Tesco (sorry for the plug) and paid over the odds, but it was a Sunday and I wanted to get all four done. This is for the inside area only but it will polish the stainless O ring element also as part of the process (which is okay). You will need elbow grease and no need for chemicals. Just keep going until all soot/carbon/crap is all gone. It gives a nice consistent sheen as you can see in my image above. Dont use this on the outside of the chrome as it will be too harsh and remove the ALPINA & Akrapovič Lettering.
  • Using the stainless steel cleaner spray a little but on outside and inside each tailpipe and buff. You dont need much and if it drips on the floor that is just excess that is not required. Buff until dry.

Sytner looks to be still closed for a new set of aluminum plates, I have some spare decal strip elements so will look at where these have perished and gone tatty at some point (front part of the wings mainly).
