thanks for the info. yes the only other wheels that fit are the 18 inch classics, these are £2500 incl. VAT but i could not get any winter tyres at all to fit them and most tyre dealers are looking at february before any stock arrives.
so maybe i could get a fiat panda 4 x 4 for the same amount of money for wheels and tyres (£4000) and maybe some fun as well without worrying too much if things went a bit a pear shaped.

No problem Mike, http://www.mytyres.co.uk these lot have warehouses in Europe, give them a call and see if they've got The Vreds for your 19"
http://bit.ly/ewayHR They are great value and I only hear positive things about those tyres... if your in the UK the small size difference should be no issue.

The cheap car, that is an option too :)

Haven't seen any roadster owners posting tyres on here - mine is still stuck behind a bank of snow (albeit under cover) so have been driving a more 'dispensable' car the past few weeks :)
Anyone ever heard of a winter wheel/tyre combination for roadsters? Summer tyres are definitely entertaining with the current conditions.... :

Tyre Pressures for winter tyres

Post by Longhaul » Wed Dec 15, 2010 1:30 pm

Hi Charles,
Followed your starter thread on winter tyres last year. I have a D3 (2006) with 19" tyres so needed 17" rims. I got s/h M3 wheels off Ebay @ £240 and in October obtained Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme from Mytyres: 205/45 91V front and 225/45 91V rear. Total £640-ish.
Anyone any idea what pressures these should be at? The Vredestein site shows 3.2bar front and 2.8 bar rear. But that seems excessively high.

Regards
Longhaul

Fronts are 2.6, with the rears at 3.1 bar.
The drivers door pillar has all the recommended pressures for various sizes

I was hoping to get mine back on this time home, but looking at the weather forecast for our area doesn't provide much hope.
Snow/wind and minus temps for tonight and tomorrow....

Changed over to summer tyres on the 320i (the one with the enormous spoiler) this evening.

Mind you, this was because I picked up a puncture on one of the winters  and I wasn't prepared to scoot up and down the M40 at 50mph on the spacesaver for the next few days until I can get to my friends at Charlett Tyres.

I'm hoping that it is repairable because, after two seasons and the best part of 15k miles, there is still 5mm of tread on all four tyres. Who said that winter tyres wear out more quickly?

Don't forget that that's only 1mm before they are due to be changed

On what basis? I used to work in marketing myself ...

I plan to change them when I start to get a noticeable reduction in performance. This may well be at 4mm but until I feel that they aren't doing what I want them to do then I will make use of the current rubber.
