Winter Tyre Compilation

Post by Charles » Fri Sep 17, 2010 1:11 am

I've tried to trawl through the forum for all the possible links to discussions about winter tyres but, to be honest, I've lost the will to live ...

Please could any owner/member, who has taken the plunge and acquired winter wheels/tyres, contribute a summary of what they bought, for which vehicle and from where.

This might help others as the winter season approaches ...

As a starter for ten:

Charles
B3S Touring (E46)
Wheels - secondhand set of 17" E46 wheels from Ebay (£175)
Tyres - Michelin Primacy Alpin 225/40/17 (£660)

Apologies for spoiling the flow of this thread with a simplistic 'newbie' question but why are many UK based alpina nutters (lovers) changing to the winter tyres and rims thi stime of year?

I ask because having driven BMWs in the southwest for 8 years I have only experience a couple of days where Ive not been able to get the car out due to weather conditions.

Is it something to do with preservation of the alpina alloys? are they particularly succeptble to road salting and corrosion? Is applying a couple of coats of wax/wheelguard insufficient?

again, apologies for the slight diversion

Ta

Dave

It isn't a case of changing wheels/tyres right now - rather a case of being prepared for winter. Nor is it about protecting ALPINA alloys.

With the first hint of ice or snow, BMWs tend to fail to make any forward progress. The use of winter tyres means that we can continue to move around relatively normally.

The purpose of this thread is to provide guidance to fellow owners of the winter set-up combinations that have been used or planned to be used when the temperature drops below 7C and wide low profile summer rubber becomes significantly less effective.

Having switched last year, I was able to travel around pretty much anywhere when we had the terrible conditions last January & February - which I quite simply would have been unable to do otherwise.

Hope this helps

The snow did render my coupe useless last year. The 9.5" wide rears were as useful as a chocolate fireguard. It did however mean that I had to work from home. Which aint all that bad as the missus fiesta had no trouble with the snow and she still went to work.

I will look into the winter tyre thing taking advice from this post but with a baby imminent they may won't be priority.

Thanks

Dave

Last winter's weather made us remember just why we'd bought the Mini....no dramas at all there in all weather, and we can cope with only one car available so the Alpina won't get used in snowy weather (very rare it snows here anyway :D ).

Congrats on the imminent arrival...
