I would at least like to see some sort of restriction in sales as in you must prove your a genuine respected garage before you are allowed one.

I honestly don't know. I guess it falls into the same area as cashpoint skimmers, confiscatable and liable to be charged as "going equipped", but made and sold outside the UK so difficult to clamp down on.

Extra security? Steering lock, pedal lock, additional immoberliser, battery kill switch. Make each journey a bit long winded though.

As per my post in here, anyone who would wish to articulate their frustrations at BMW's lack of interest in this issue with the E9x-based models, please email Matt....his address is on the post. It's the only way we will prove a point to them (ie, there IS a known problem) and unless we work as a team, we'll get nowhere. So far, he has received 3 emails...everyone else is apparently blindingly happy with their cars' standard security system and inability to defeat a thief.

Up to you guys, now....a lone moan or 3 will get us nowhere

It may be a group gripe doesn't either, but if they want our repeat business and we want to keep our current cars until we decide to move them on, it's up to us to say so and do something about it.

I expect a resounding silence, again. Surprise me. Please

I have emailed Matt.

...and I got what appears to be a very non committal standard stock response.

its simple, they will not recognise openly that there is an issue until enough complaints are made.

Thats my opinion, anyway.

Agree with you.

Thanks for the support: very much appreciated. I will tell Matt exactly what I think about this when I see him in September. We won't be buying a new BMW of any variant as long as this issue runs.

Just had the car serviced at my main dealer (yeah, I know but they're nice to me

) . The young lady on service reception had never heard of this issue (!) but the service manager and workshop manager had. Their comment was that "BMW are well aware of the situation but have issued no instructions". I took "instructions" to mean resolution.

Email to that effect sent to Matt.

I've emailed BMW UK, here is their answer:

Dear Dr Blancheteau,

Thank you very much for your online communication dated July 27, 2012. I am extremely sorry to learn that you have been given cause for concern regarding the security of your vehicle following some coverage on the Internet.

Firstly, I would like to advise that whilst BMW take pride in guaranteeing the safety and performance of our vehicles, respecting the safety regulations existing in the various countries, a car manufacturer cannot possibly know the many techniques used by criminals all over the world. At this stage, I can only recommend that you contact your local police force, who can instead advise on the measures to adopt to deter local criminals, since this is their field of expertise. I sincerely hope that the police bring this situation to a close.

Furthermore, I also understand that you would like to know if BMW are taking steps with regards to this issue. In this instance, I suggest that you liaise with your local BMW Approved Dealership. After inspecting and assessing your onboard computer, they will be in the best position to advise if there are any issues or updates required.

I am sorry that I have been unable to fully address your concerns in this first instance, however, I do hope that this information is of use to you. I have recorded details of your contact as an official customer complaint under case reference number 1-8319634179, which may be utilised as part of our ongoing internal auditing programme in the future.

Check your computer for potential updates? Seems they're able to steal newer cars than yours with no resistance at all from the OBC, so that's a pointless suggestion. Krooklok it.
