Alpina D3S Number 014

Post by big blue » Fri Apr 23, 2021 6:27 pm

I could not stay away for long so let me introduce the G20 Alpina D3S Number 014. There is a discussion on green vs blue on the forum at the moment so here are two of the BMW G2* generation side by side.

That is really stunning.

Makes me rethink my "no new car" rule!!

I'll keep an eye out for that in Sheffield.

Beautiful, makes a change to see a saloon. Really like the Fjord Blue leather. Is that ALPINA Blue, looks a bit like Portimao Blue?

It was a really sunny day today so a good one for images and photos. The side by side was at Sytner Nottingham today. I will be out and about in South Yorkshire most days so will be spotted at some stage.

Your eye for detail is bang on the money again. Yes this is the case on the colour. I have to tip my hat to Alpina for how they take a standard shell and make it look, feel and drive like this one does. More torque than the last D3 F30 and drive to all four wheels it is a different drive experience (as you might expect) from the last generation.

That's lovely, really like the blue on the interior too. Not a fan on all back leather and this is very tasteful

That is fantastic Richard - the colour combination with the interior looks really good. Something a bit different too. The blue looks amazing in bright sunlight.

The car looks great in either colour, and I quite like the black grille, but the main thing which strikes me is just how much nicer the B3/D3 now looks, compared to the M3!

Now, if they could just produce a B4/D4 with the nose from the B3/D3, that would be rather a cool thing...

P.S. love the interior of your car!

Congratulations Big Blue on the D3 S. I think Portimao Blue really suits the car - this was the colour I originaly specified before jumping to green (via grey).

I've not driven one yet, though I have driven the G01 XD3 and G21 B3. What are your impressions of the power train? Is the adoption of mild-hybridness apparent? How does it compare to the F30 D3? Does it still feel suitably rapid despite the increase in weight?

The drive feels very sharp and powerful. I think anyone who has ever liked the D3 has liked the torque outputs, which are now at a massive 730Nm for the G2* D3S. I think that it will be 6 months from October that winter/wet/cold handling will be put to a test where the biggest comparison would be compared to the F30. To be honest, I have not really been over 2000 RPM or plan to during its first 500 miles as I am a traditionalist for running the engine in. It may not be required on modern engines, but I think it is good for 100% of the car to get to know itself and all of its mechanical and electrical parts before "going for it".

Obviously biased, but this is a beautiful piece of engineering and I will make the most of fossil fuel driving as often as I can before the world goes totally electric.
