B3 Touring Restoration

Post by Elan » Tue Feb 24, 2015 12:50 pm

I thought I would post up the restoration progress of B3 touring #113. Hopefully it will be useful to others or I may get some advice from you guys about the work. Unfortunately I cannot take any credit for any of the work as all the work has been completed by various garages.

I picked up the car in average condition with quite a bit of work to do but the car drove well and the mechanic who inspected the car was happy with it.

When I got the car home it looked like this:

You can see the rear arches not being in great shape!

The first thing I had to replace was the rocker cover gasket and all the fluids and plugs in case it had not been done before.

After few months of driving the transmission went in to limp mode. I spoke to a few transmission specialist and decided to get the gearbox fully rebuilt. I had planned to do this work at some stage but not so soon. :(

The car was taken to Hardy engineering who fully rebuilt the gearbox.

The car came back and drove nicely so I decided to address the rear arches which we believed was only surface rust. When the covers came off it proved to be slightly more than surface rust!

The body shop said that they would need to do quite a bit of work to address the affected areas. I decided to proceed with the work which will be another big dent in the wallet!

I decided to check the whole to make sure there was no further surprises with rust and a few other areas was found.

There was also surface rust where the chassis number was etched on the front strut so I had these treated too!

Yep, I am his favourite customer. I feel I am getting a tad obsessive with good paint finish.

I paid a fair price and I expected to carry out some work over time, but maybe not so soon.

I am not planning to sell so not concerned about recovering any of the money spent!

The gearbox has been great since the rebuild. Most of the car will be resprayed and then the plan is to get the car in for detailing/paint correction.

I am glad I posted the pics now! Surprisingly the front wings were fine.

A very good thread an enjoyable read, but I would either remove the photo of your VIN numbers or edit it so they don't show the full VIN- meaning the numbers that are unique to your car

However recently some adverts on autotrader and PH have ALPINAs with full VINs

Also how does the B3 compare with the M3?
