Renewal time again? another discount please!

Post by Bruce M » Thu Jan 21, 2010 7:06 pm

It is that time of year again for me!

As per usual, the process followed the exact same path as the last umpteen years.

I have used Ad.miral for quite a few years and the renewal landed on the mat a week or so ago.

The quote for this year was circa £50 more than last year.

Logged on to the Elephant site (sister company to Ad.miral but online only service).

Got a quote with the exact same spec (excess, protected no claims, fully comp etc).

Phoned up Ad.miral and gave them the Elephant quote ref number.

Admiral then drop the price to match the Elephant quote.

Total saving?

30% !!!!!!

As usual the renewal rate is the lazy idiot price and was slashed with 10mins effort.

Admiral are complete bandits for doing this. Last year, letter quote was 2k for my little batch. So went to Admiral website for multicar quote put in false name but all other details were identical, 50% cheaper - £1000!!!. Rang them up to complain and they honoured the quote - no explanation as to why. This has happened 4 yrs on trot with Admiral multicar quote.

The way I see it, the less motivated customers subsidise our cheaper premiums.

On the back of this thread, I just got a quote from Elephant.. £750 FC. Not great, but better than the ~£1000 I had got on price comparison sites!

Ah, it goes up to £818 once the suspension, LPG and (soon to be) uprated brakes are applied. Still not too bad!

Without my partner added, it's £1080!

The best thing of all, if I ADD a tracker to my car, my insurance goes up £25! :D

I just got mine with LV. This year it goes to near £900 FC. An increase of £50 when compare with last year and £200 2 years before which is due to have an accident. I even had my ncb protected but there is still an increase for the last 2 years

Saw an article in the Daily Mirror today reporting that in general policies have gone up by 20% and they are expected to rise by another 15% next year,
the insurance industry is saying this is due to prices being held artificially low for several years,
the Insurance companies say they cannot sustain this any longer due to.....wait for it ...................... a huge increase in Whiplash claims!
as discussed in this thread:

Two thumbs up for Elephant/admiral. After getting my online quote I had a chase-up call from them trying to sell me a multi-car policy. With a pinch of salt I gave him the details of my partners car, which resulted in a pretty good quote.

Alpina B3S with: LPG, uprated brakes, uprated suspension, uprated panel air filter. £706 fully comp. IAM members get another £20 knocked off, taking it to £686..

Peugeot 307 HDi (standard bar a few optional extras): £101 fully comp

Both insured to drive each others cars and the policy can start now even though my partners insurance doesn't start until October time.

If you have multiple cars, I'd highly recommend giving them a shout. I have also heard LV run a simular policy, but you can also include house insurance too, with further savings.

Elephant have always been cheaper than Admiral for me, even though they are the same company. Just a shame Elephant don't offer multicar.

My only worry with multicar and why I have avoided it so far, is that come renewal time, it is harder to do like for like comparisons.

I suspect (as highlighted by Dubbers), is that come renewal time the quote will not be as competitive. Dubbers trick of getting a quote using a false name reduced the premium from £2K to £1K

worth remembering for new year, Rich.

Of course the insurance company could use this against you. You tick a box or say yes to "all information supplied is correct".... and we know how much insurnace companies like to help us motorist!

I bought my daughter a car for her 17th.... it was a nightmare getting quotes.....

She's not 17..... OBVIOUSLY!!!, btu she will be when she gets the car!
She hasn't got a license.... well she's not 17 yet....
etc etc

ANd now its always the same arguement.... how much no claims....3 yrs... how long has she had a full license.....2 yrs..... well how can she have 3 yrs no claims then????? COZ SHE INSURE THE CAR BEFORE SHE PASSED HER TEST?!?!??!?!

Another year and another over inflated quotation letter from Admiral Multicar. Dont get me wrong, convenience is great, but at what cost....?

This year, I set about the web requote and with the only change to the details being an anagram of my name, the reduction in the quote was £1200 (from £2600) . Each car in my fleet had a reduced premium of ~ £400. Surprisingly the X3 was the most expensive to insure!

Received my renewal letter today.
It's only gone down by 25% so can't really complain about that.

Still gonna do the old price comparison to see how much some brokers/companies are trying to screw out of me.
