I am due an oil change next month and have now run out of SLX. I know you can still get SLX if you try hard enough, but if Edge 0W-30 is good (or better!) then I'll move over to that. (I think they also do an oil called Edge Sport 0W-40.... does anybody know, is that suitable for the 3.3?)
Regards
Simon

LL0W 40 which is the dealer version on Castrol Edge is what the dealers would be using in your 3.3 if you took it to them - it;s used on ALL bmw's with exception of the M cars which get 10W 60 TWS Motorsport Castrol.

LL04 (BMW longlife-04) replacement is CASTROL EDGE SPORT 0W-40, so you shouldn't be using 0W-30.
Castrol say SPORT should be used in BMW's, so i'm guessing should be better for Alpina engines too.

Yes Edge replaced LL04 on the retail market - but the dealers are all still using LL04

What I was trying to point out was that you quoted LL0W 40 - which lead us to believe that LL04 has a grade of 0W-40. This is not true.
SLX LL04 has a grade of 0W-30.

Castrol produce a new 0W-30 oil named EDGE 0W-30, but interestingly don’t recommend this for BMW. They recommend CASTROL EDGE SPORT 0W-40.

Just checked out Castrol Oils at Halfords. The Edge 0w/30 says on the pack for modern BMW, Mercedes etc and is LL01 spec. at £42.99. The Edge Sport 0w/40 is for high performance engines and is LL04 spec. at £36.99? So the Edge Sport is the best buy?

Hello all, thanks for the recent flurry of help, but I'm still a bit confused. The original oil specified for the car is Castrol SLX 0W-30 and I have been using this till now, but have run out. The last lot of Castol SLX I bought was privately from a member here: great, but not convenient. I'm happy that I should stick with Castrol, but should it be the 0W-30 (Edge) or the 0W-40 (Edge Sport?)
Is there a significant difference?
Regards
Simon

This might help calrify:
oilman wrote:The SLX has been replaced with Edge 0w-30.

The TWS has also been replaced with Edge 10w-60

The BMW LL04 Approved oil is now Edge Sport 0w-40

Cheers

I've just booked my B10 in for a service and asked if the SLX was still available. The dealer advised me they have 2500 litres (yes 2500) left?????? Perhaps I should find out if it is for sale separately or only in large containers / drums for servicing needs.

I've decided on the Edge 0w-30 as it is the replacement for SLX, and bought 8 litres from Halfords. (Gulp!)
Thanks again, all, for input.

Simon if you get a trade card from Halfords there are good discounts to be had. £17/£18 off two packs of Edge.

Thanks Geoff
Too late for this purchase, but there will be other times. This might be a silly question, but how do you persuade them to give you a trade card if you aren't trade? (Apart from lying  )

Simon, when I bought my last two packs of oil I was asked if I had a trade card. I said I didn't so they said would you like one, I said yes please :D I believe it is at the managers discretion.
