Aha

sounds overdue like I think mine was. I had a garage do it so didnt see the state of the pipes come off. One point worth mentioning is the rocker cover gasket and oil cap seal were a bit under pressure and leaking prior to the CVV and now repaired and VERY clean engine again

Hope its a useful tell tale sign for some others.

To add my recent findings to this ongoing topic (and after reading through several threads on this site), I finally decided to change the oil to 10W60 at my last service in December due to consumption on my B3 3.3 (2000) being as bad as 1 litre every 400 miles or so.

The result so far has been a total distance driven of just over 1,250 miles without having to top up. A good result I guess with no other noticable difference (other than a few extra quid in my pocket)!

Also using 10w-60 on the B10 3.3 and I now add a litre about every 3-4k miles, which is fine by me, as it keeps fresh blood in the engine

Done a few sums on our Roadster S oil usage for a while now since I changed the oil in October to a fresh load of Castrol Edge 0w-30.

So, oil used since change:- 3.075l
Usage rate since change:- 647miles/litre
Odometer reading:- 48683miles

Having sufficient 0W-30 for the service in a couple of weeks time, we will throw that in and then change to Castrol Edge 5W-40 for topping up and the next oil change (whilst monitoring consumption as these mix).

Ouch

The B3S has now settled down with 0W-30 and I can report that I am now getting about 3k miles per litre based on lengthy motorway commutes each day (40 miles e/w). Not as good as it used to be but still extremely acceptable when compared against average oil consumption figures for other owners - so I'm not planning to change away from it for the moment.

Fuel consumption is 27-28mpg - would be more but I'll be damned if I spend my commute in Lane 1 all the way there and back  - so that's acceptable too.

New member looking for pointers
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I read recently that Alpina altered their recommendations from 5w30 to 10w60 oil for the E46 B3 3.3 engines (as BMW do for their M3 engines). Would this be correct? (You know what the internet is like! :D )
Thanks.

Only if your engine is consuming oil at a rate higher than ALPINA consider normal. This was a specific recommendation for 3.3 engines built c2000 and not necessarily a general "upgrade"

Read all of this having just acquired the B3 3.3 1999 vintage, so will obviously monitor oil usage closely. Having said that I’ve never seemed to have much success with Castrol oils. Used it in the m3 s50b32 engine, used oil. Switched to silkolene then Fuchs Pro S 5w 40 Ester based oil and stopped using oil between service. If the b3 uses oil I’ll switch to same. Bearing in mind my acceptable usage may be different to Alpina. Both these cars are not daily drivers and will do 3k absolute maximum each per year. My acceptable is not topping up between oil changes which they will still get once per year. Don’t like dealers or any garage doing oil changes as they never get the oil to working temperature and then drain so that all the impurity’s come out with the oil and aren’t still stuck to the inside of the sump walls. Now a days it’s mostly sucked out of the dipstick tube. No one will ever convince me this is a good idea. From a manafacturers point of view it’s a great idea, cheaper and quicker. I know I’m guilty of way over servicing but I don’t care. So there.
Normally if I was using oil my first port of call would be oil leaks, (the sponge on the x5 skid plate held an amazing amount of oil before dripping) after that the ccv system although in the b3’s case I know that is clean, Mayo free and seems to be in good nick? Although I read on USA sites that they have had apparently amazing results (from 1qt every 500 miles to 0 in 10k) by modifying the ccv system?? Long winded again.

My 107,000 mile 2003 B10 4.8S uses much less than half a litre in 8000 miles, i can only recall topping it up once in 21000 miles of ownership, second green service light just went out 13 months after a Sytner inspection 2 service, this is with some external evidence of some minor oil weeps. Am I lucky ?!

I have never had to top up the oil in my V8S between changes but I gather that oil usage is low for these engines so not so much luck as design. I suppose if it was driven as hard as it could outside the UK oil consumption might be more.
