Insuring a G2x B3

Post by Jonnywishbone » Thu Feb 24, 2022 10:14 pm

Insuring an Alpina of any sort seems to be trickier than it ought to be for various reasons and as a result many on the forum use specialist brokers and Thatcham A-Plan seems to be the go to. The newest generation of B3 has the added wrinkle of not showing up on most of the databases insurance companies seem to use due I presume to a combination of its novelty and rarity. If the car is recognised at all from the registration it’s apparently an X3M Competition (close enough in the engine stakes, at least) but the new B3 can’t be found on most insurers drop down searches either. The same goes for the Meerkats and the rotund Welsh opera dude.

As a result, I thought I’d see if I could find out which insurers do actually recognise my car, online and without any palaver. I restricted my search to only those providers and products with a Defaqto 5* rating and went through them all, trying to obtain a quote, one by one. The list is as follows:

- BMW Flex (I should think so too!)
- Hastings Direct
- Vitality
- Tesco

That’s it. Of those, the BMW price is uncompetitively high and is a rolling monthly subscription and both Vitality and Tesco could not - for reasons that weren’t given - offer a quote online and suggesting phoning up. Which leaves only one provider offering a reasonable price for an apparently decent insurance product.

I have been insuring all my Alpinas for many years with LV, formerly Frizzels.

They have always been very competitive, the premium for my current Alpina B3S Bi Turbo Cab is £284 per annum, this includes protected NCB and full European and UK breakdown cover.

It would be worth talking to them. 0800 085 5663.

Thank you I appreciate the tip, will give them a go, especially as they along with Aviva are one of my preferred insurers as in my experience and by reputation they offer good customer service.

Second that re. LV, been with them for around 7 years and never felt the need to shop around at renewal time.
B5 G30 number 332 (development car)

D5 number 21

D3MT number 284 (gone but will be sadly missed)

I initially insured my B5 with LV but a few months into the policy, they cancelled claiming they no longer cover that type of car. I've put more details in the insurance thread. I've now got both the B4 and B5 with Tesco.
