Who Should Advise UK Insurers About Alpinas?

Post by churchie386 » Sun Jun 06, 2021 1:29 pm

Who should actually advise UK Insurers (or the fedration etc) about Alpina cars and models? Is this the responsibility of Alpina UK / Sytner?

I'm trying to understand why some models are readlily recognised by the vast majority of online insures and yet others are not. A point in case is the F3x D3 is on all drop downs, yet G2x D3 S are not.

It strikes me Alpina UK are doing its customers and their potential market a disservice in this regard. Surely it is just a question of paper work, similar to type approvals etc.

I cant imagine that the franchisee Sytner would have any responsibility for advising insurers about models. I guess the database of vehicles is held by the individual Insurance provider or their brokers? But on the basis there are fairly small numbers of ALPINA vehicles of all models it does not particularly surprise me that generally most have not go them all listed.

I think for this reasons some people, like me, use a broker who knows and understands the models. I provided photographs of mine along with a letter of authenticity from ALPINA to my broker.

The simple rule I would use is the insurer or broker has never heard of ALPINA or the specific model then move on to one that has. I am sure many people on here can make suggestions?

Personally I am with A Plan insurance 01635 874646, but there are surely many others?

This is interesting...

Having being with Adrian Flux for several years i was very surprised to find they had no clue what my F11 D5 is when i phoned to change over.

They covered it, but after a very lengthy phone call and basing it on a 535d plus a random figure plucked out of thin air i suspect.

I will be changing at renewal time- i'd feel better if my insurer knows what my car is.

From the FAQ section of the Alpina UK wbesite ...

Do I have to insure my BMW ALPINA on the basis of official motor vehicle insurance categories as used by the German insurance industry?

We advise you to contact you personal insurance provider or agent. For previous generation BMW ALPINA models (for example F10, F11 etc.) the official motor vehicle insurance categories did not apply, the insruance premium was based on individual, case by case, agreements with the insurance company providing the cover. This may also apply moving forwards for current BMW ALPINA models. In Germany the following ALPINA insurance partners are happy to advise you www.alpina-automobiles.com/en/services/insurance/
Present & Past: Alpina D3BT (F31); Alpina D3 S (G21); Subaru Forester XT (SG 2.0); Porsche 718 Cayman; Golf R (Mk7); 911 (997.2); 911 (996); Subaru WRX STI (Hatch); Alpina D3BT (E90); BMW 330i (E91); Elise (S1); Skoda Fabia VRS (Mk1); Peugeot 106 GTi; Skoda Octovia VRS (Mk2 estate); Subaru Impreza WRX (Wagon); Subaru Impreza Turbo (Wagon); Lancia Delta Integrale Evo; Golf VR6; Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9; BMW M3 (E30); Peugeot 106 GTi; Renault Clio 16v; Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9; Escort Mk3; Escort Mk1

I am unsure if that advice is helpful or not? What do others think?

I tried to swap my current insurance over to my Alpina D5 but they couldn't do it as it was not listed on their database. Even after giving them the VIN numbers, they tried to manually input it in but they still couldn't do it or insure it. I only had one month left before I got another year's no claims. :doh

I went onto Gocompare and Money Supermarket. Couldn't get any insurance from Money Supermarket because I couldn't find any Alpina's within their selections of cars. I ended up with insurance through gocompare with Tesco believe it or not. I got a further discount for being a club card owner as well. :dance

So I think it depends on the list of vehicles that each insurer uses. When the comparisons came up on Gocompare I noticed that there were a few insurers missing, so I'm guessing if it's not on their list, then they won't insure you, so I would advise you to go to a specialist.

It's with Tesco Bank and according to the policy, it's underwritten by Tesco Underwritings Ltd.

I guess Tesco is financially sound enough to be a Licenced Credit broker and Insurance underwriter regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority?
