Alpina Insurance - Help
Alpina Insurance - Help
Morning all.
I have just had a renewal notice for the insurance on my E46 B3 3.3.
The summary is that the renewal is £725/year with £100 excess. I am not paying that!
I have a clean licence - never had a single point, but had a minor shunt (my fault) late last year. The insurer told me that the government has recently changed the car ratings. The Alpina is now a group U car.
Can anyone help me with this? I note that APlan and Adrian Flux have been recommended.

Thanks Hap.
I have always said that the UK car insurance industry is largely unregulated and a mine field. It is deliberately designed not to be understood by the masses.
I called up A-Plan as recommended by this forum. They offered me FC for £510 - but has a £300 excess and only 2k business miles per year. 10k total miles.
I went back to my original broker with this news and they don't understand how the price can be that low. The irony is that both brokers are quoting me for KGM at Lloyds policies.
As per my original point - unregulated and a minefield.

Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
The sums you have been quoted are unrealistic Rav, I insured my B3 3.3 Cab with A Plan, insurer KGM in February for £255.
This sum included UK and European breakdown cover.
I do not have any no claims bonus on this policy as the NCBs I have are used for 2 other vehicles.
Agreed value £14k
4000 miles P A.
I do not have business use, but I can not see that that would increase the premium by very much.
Might be worth going back to A plan and quote my figures.
Have you tried LV, just received the renewal for my B10 V8S £234

Thanks B10BRW - Your prices seem to be what I want! May i ask your age please? I am circa 40 and am sure that this is what is driving the prices up. I live in Marlborough in what i am told is a low crime area.
I have never had points, or convictions and had one small accident last year where i hit a parked car.

Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
Hi B10BRW,
I would also like to agree that LV are worth a look, when I got my B5 earlier this year I was struggling to get ANY insurer to cover it as it had an LSD, they were all running scared over it - I too have a clean licence and long no claims. I think LV's attitude of accepting anything that was factory fitted as being ok really helped but the premium was reasonable and the cover perfect for my needs - and their threshold for me needing a tracker was just above the price I paid for the car so didn't have to bother with that extra cost either.
I found some of the comparison sites struggled to identify the car too which did not help, even the official BMW insurers took a few goes to be able to find it - some list it within BMW as a model and some have as Alpina being a manufacturer in their own right so that might broaden your search if you try both.
It was a member on here that recommended them to me but it was just before the site was hacked and all of the history of that was lost so I can't even pass the credit for that advice back to the original provider, anyway, I hope that helps

Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
Thanks. I will give LV a call tomorrow.
The problem i found with shopping around is that you need to list your life story to each insurance company/broker again and again. Its a GDPR nightmare!
I will let you know how i get on with LV tomorrow.

Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
These sort of discussions can prove to be fairly pointless. I have spoken at length to a Director of an Insurance Company, there are so many factors that make up the quotation, it is virtually impossible to compare like for like. It should be noted that insurance quotes are based on the number of claims being made against an Insurer and their fund. Renewing after bad weather, flood, Ice, Snow when there are many claims can simply increase a premium, even though you have not been personally involved.
The make and model (needs to be fully understood by the Insurer or their agent), age, mileage and declared value, no claims bonus, clean licence or points, occupation, post code, where vehicle is kept, garage, dive, road etc. Alarm system, tracker or equivalent fitted, the list is not exhaustive. Legal protection, voluntary excess, screen excess, modifications (if any). There are many more, but you get my examples.
Trying to say Fred have you tried this or that without all the facts is a lottery.
I have mine with Marker Study, it is 100% insured with a specialist who knows what the car is, has photographs, copies of service details, letter of authenticity from ALPINA. I do have 9 years NCB but pointless stating how much it costs for reasons aforementioned.

Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
Fari point Norrie - but this is exaclty the reason i say that the insurance industry is not regulated. Its been made so complex that you cannot align with someone else and hence cannot compare.
I just called LV who after lots of head scratching have told me that they dont cover the E46 Alpina B3.
Great!

Agreed - call A Plan 01635 874646 speak to Carlie Norwell or Matthew Minchin - cherished vehicle specialist. I deal with them and the Director is Henry Francis who supports BMW and ALPINA in their business.

Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
Yeah - they said the same to me for the B5 - but when I made them search the other way around (BMW first then Alpina) they found mine - can't promise it'll be the same for you as per norrie's comments, or even that they will be able to find it but it was worth the extra effort for me as they were cheaper by miles compare to the few people that would even quote the car (I'd had a quote from A Plan already)...
Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
In respect of the last post. I accept that you had a "better" quote. However, not specifically ALPINA related but insurance related. My Son's partner chose the cheapest quote on line with Hastings direct for her Mini. She had an accident after skidding on a newly resurfaced road. The recovery man ripped of the front spoiler and put it on the recovery truck. Next day she calls the insurance and is told based on the details she has given the car is a write off? I take her to the recovery location and the spoiler has gone "missing". We empty the car and find our own garage for the car to be taken to, however she has to take photographs and upload them at the same time into the insurers portal. That presupposes everyone has a mobile phone with photo capability and the internet access. Yes, I know most do. Then an advisor tells her it is still a write off. The car starts, drives, no leaks, oil, water, coolant and apart from a small dent and missing bumper it appear comparatively small damage. They offer her the lowest of three guides for price, less her excess and unpaid premiums. She rejects the offer and only then can it go to an engineer to inspect. We shall see. My point is the cheapest does not appear to be the best?

Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
I done the shopping around and thought I am spending too much against no accidents points claims
As Norman says you think on paper it will be less but never Is
I know that if anything happens to mine I’ll get it sorted I can take it sytner or any garage I want yes it’s annoying each year it goes up but it’s that assurance I am sure I could get it less but I wouldn’t have the above protection

Re: Alpina Insurance - Help
I have just joined the Alpina register and reading this made my eyes water, some of the prices quoted are way beyond what I’d be prepared to pay. Having just acquired a 1999 b3 needing lots of work. It would be a hobby car doing less than 2000 miles a year. I went on the comparison sites to get insurance for my wife with me as second driver and was quoted £148 by BeWise. That I can live with We are both in our 60s
