Insurance

Post by Paulb » Sun Jul 24, 2016 7:06 pm

It's that time of year where my existing insurer likes to hike up the premium thinking that existing customers should be penalised for staying with them!

So starting the annual hawk of the insurance and thought i'd try BMW's own Insurance scheme.

Was a bit amazed to find out that they won't insure the Alpina F31 D3 biturbo!

So, who's reasonable and will both know what an Alpina is and insure them (Quote me happy being the existing and L&V being an optional already)?

I took delivery of a new B4 in April and did an extensive search including A-plan, Adrain Flux, going direct and through comparison websites.

Hands down Hastings Direct came out rediculously cheap compared to all other companies (including my old insurer Esure)... The next cheapest was double Hastings quote... Some were 3x , 4x even more.

I did a little digging and they had reasonably good feedback from existing customers. The cover was pretty good rather then being basic with lots of add on's and if you can stomach all of your documents being online rather then being sent to you in hard printed format then I would highly recommend giving them a try :)

Esure was the best for me. Phone them rather then get a quote online. I saved around £100.

I have business use on mine so might not be the same for just social. Been with them for a good few years and when my renewals are due I always do a quick online check and so far the renewal offer has beat any reroute from other companies.

Thanks Dan,
Had a good chat with one of your colleagues when he called this morning.
Shame you've not got the F30/F31 D3 Biturbo listed on your system

Same for A-plan - they too don't list the D3 Biturbo - only a 2015, B3S Biturbo coupe or touring petrol manual! :(

Looks like i'm sticking with the QuoteMeHappy lot.

 You have to just love these so called insurance companies.

That said. We have never had a problem with A-Plan. But then we don't buy new cars either

I found Footman James very competitive, I don't have any no claims on the B5 as moving it from the daily driver was prohibitive. Circa £390 PA limited mileage but able to increase the total if needed, plus all the usual compulsory add ons! :)

I had just phoned my insurance company (endsleigh) to cancel my insurance on my E36 Touring and was told it had £62 left on the policy to come back but after admin and cancellation fees this comes to £75 and so I owed them £13.

So I have to pay an extra £13 to NOT be insured anymore and still have 4 months left on the policy.

I know these phone conversations are apparently recorded and it is not the person unfortuante to answer the call but I could not help but laugh and might have said something not completely appropriate. Yeah, I am sure it is all in the small print but still ....

Anyway I told him not to bother cancelling and I will let it run its course.
Sold to a friend of a friend anyway so not that bothered.

If you have a policy in your name but have sold the car you run the risk of having your insurance record affected. if the new owner has an accident as the insurance company is still able to be pursued for any losses incurred by a third party due to the car they are covering in your name. It makes no difference that you don't own the car anymore, the insurance company have to still honour the claim.
This is what I was told by a previous insurer when I was in your situation. Daft but maybe better to be safe and clear of doubt for the sake of a few pounds.
Maybe worth checking if this still applies nowadays with your insurer.

I cant see why you would cancel a policy. All we do is change the vehicle on the existing one and pay the difference if there is one. Done this twice already this year.

Hi,
We have noticed that some Alpina models can take a while to appear of the vehicle data bases. Did we manage to give you any premium?

Dan.

You are absolutely right of course, I should cancel the policy for the reasons you have mentioned, and probably will once reason kicks in again.

I had to cancel (could not just swap cars and pay the difference up to end of the policy date) as the underwriter of the E36 Touring could/would not insure the Alpina according to endsleigh and so I was forced to cancel and start again witn a different underwriter.
Endsleigh then wanted to charge me £418 for the renew plus the cancellation fee bla bla bla.
I managed to get the Alpina on my multi car policy for £280.

I will cancel, its not the £13, its the principle - but probably not the brightest move - it is what it is.
