I've had my B10 3.3 for less than a week and the fuel consumption is all over the place.
We've just returned from a weekend in the West Country and I was a little perturbed to find that the car was only returning 24mpg on a fairly gentle 120 mile drive down the motorway most of which was done at about 75mph as we were early.
A further 100 miles of cross country driving with a bit of crawling around Bath mixed in saw the average drop to 23mpg
Setting off back up the M5 from Weston-Super-Mare I reset the OBC and again sticking to between 75 and 80 mph the car retyurned an indicated 31.5mpg on the return journey.
I find it very odd that a two similar journeys in similar conditions should return a fuel consumption 30% better on the second day than the first

Ian - don't you realise that it's actually uphill all the way from Tamworth to Weston Super Mare?Ian J wrote:I find it very odd that a two similar journeys in similar conditions should return a fuel consumption 30% better on the second day than the first

I'm still feeling my way with my Alpina B10 3.3 but a 10 mile round trip to the supermarket today returned an average of 14mpg which is worse than I got from my Jeep Grand Cherokee.
My recently departed Mercedes CLK320 would have returned about 22mpg on that run.
The car has done just over 26,500 miles in 4.5 years and had an Oil Inspection a couple of years ago at 12,000 miles and another oil inspection last month from a non franchised dealer courtesy of the dealer that I bought the car off.
I'm wondering whether I should send the car to Ryedale for a proper service as I'm sure that the consumption should be better than that

Ian, your fuel consumption ought to be better than you are getting, but do you think perhaps it's because the car is new to you and you are exercising your right foot more? I find that when I have a new car the fuel consumption is not as good as it ought to be (!!) then it levels off after a while. This I believe is down to my driving style not the car.

Whilst there are times when I do hoof it, this morning wasn't one of them and last weekend when we did a 350 mile round trip to Somerset I took it fairly gently then too as I didn't want to arrive at the hotel before checkin time.
I'll keep an eye on the consumption for the next week or two and see if it improves.

I've had my B10 3.3 saloon for six weeks and covered 1,045 miles of mainly mixed driving averaging 20.69 with the best tankful returning 24.2 which was a 330 mile weekend trip consisting mainly of taking it easy on the motorway and the worst tankful averaging 17.34mpg which was mainly round town driving.neil wrote:Name | Car | Year | Average | Best | Worse | period monitored
I'll start things off with my old B10:
Neil - B10 3.3 saloon - 1999 - 27.3mpg / 31.5mpg / 23.8mpg - (04/2000 - 08/2003)
The round town mpg is actually worse than my old Jeep Grand Cherokee which surprises me

You could try running a fuel line cleaner through it. It may be because of the low mileage and lots of driving from cold over the last 4.5 years. Do you know what fuel was being used in it before you had it? We have found that fuel economy and general running of 'normal' cars can degrade over time with supermarket fuel and a fuel additive can sort this out fairly quickly. I personally use Valvoline Synpower at my workshop but there are others around (we have found this one particularly good though).

Ian, When I was poor student I run out of fuel a couple of times in my Sapphire 2000E and the car would run rough. I therefore used Slick 50 fuel treatment and this solved the hesitation. Some people do prefer Grease Lighting fuel treatment.
