Thanks Matt,

My insurance is up tomorrow so I've just tried as you suggested and the Alpina dropped to £403 pa which is a decent discount on their original multi car quote.

However, I've ran some more quotes again and I've now gone with Churchill who are covering the Alpina at £327 (includes a £23 multi car discount) and my wife's Golf GTD at £201 pa

Appreciate the reply and agree, sometimes there's no rational explanation behind the varying quotes produced

Time to renew the insurance on the B3s.....Current company, A-Plan gave renewal as £285 with £350 excess on 5yrs nbc and low mileage discount.

Approached Adrian Flux and pushed them to beat £270....they managed £265 with free legal cover, courtesy car and 3rd party cover to drive other cars thrown in!

Went back to A-Plan and, by some miracle, they matched AF's quote!

I did try AF once more to see if they would beat £265 but no joy. I'm happy with the £20 reduction and improved cover!

It is very strange. Especially that they are still quoting for my car. I got to the point where I could click to confirm the policy so looks like it would have gone through.

Be interesting to see if any other Alpina owners on here have issues.
I've been shopping around this morning for my renewal and LV are top of my list so far...

Has anybody else had any issues with LV refusing to cover their Alpina?

I have three cars with LV ...
B3 BITURBO ... renewed last August for £258.88 ( increase on previous year of £17.14 ... probably go up again, but nicely manageable )
MERIVA 1.8 ( the Dog car ! ) .. renewed last August for £273.26 ( increase on previous year of £5.91 ) ... annoying expensive !
BMW X1 XDRIVE20I ... renewed last August for £369.30 ( increase on previous year of £21.55 )

I also have 3 building insurances with them and life insuarances, all of which gets me discounts on every policy.
All in all I am happy with LV
B3 BiTurbo Cabrio #121 (E93) + Quaife ATB LSD
X1 2.0 Twin-Scroll Turbo xDrive #zillion (F48) ... really useful, if only an XB1 existed !

--- but when you are up to your ears in alligators it can be relatively difficult to remember that your original idea was to drain the swamp --- hmmm

OK re-reading, maybe I should have added that each car has my wife as a named driver and also a specific annual mileage attached - being retired for over 10 years now, maybe we benefit from being in an older age bracket, and we really don't travel as far as we used to.

In respect of service, last year we had a water leak inside a wall and the house insurance covered the damage with about £8000 worth of rectification/replacement with no quibble at all.

My wife's D3BT is insured with LV and the renewal quote went from £394.68 DOWN to £270.89. This was based on the new legislation regarding renewals being no worse than if you were a new customer. Needless to say I didn't shop around just let it auto renew last week. The relevant sentence is below.

'We’ve checked your renewal price against the price you would get as a new customer with us, using information that we
know about you. If you’d like to know more, please visit LV.com/gi/fca-faqs'
"The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire."

Thanks for the info :)

I've just gone with LV for £392.

Now to phone Adrian Flux to tell them to shove their £950 renewal offer...

Why is it always such a nightmare every year?
Been with Highway via A-Plan since 2017; no change of details on my side but always some changes from theirs, eg., operative policy endorsements which you don't see until you receive your Policy Amendment Schedule after you've renewed. These were last year's:
255 - Thatcham Cat 1 immobiliser. OK, OEM standard equipment so no problems there.
262 - Market value. "Agreed value is inoperative". What?? They switched me to market value. 10% premium increase if I want it switched back again.
001 - Excluding Section 5 - Cabs. "Personal Accident, Belongings and Medical Expenses does not apply" - because it's a convertible!
B014 - Comp Audio. (Upgraded ICE/Satnav). Max payout £500 unless it's manufacturer's standard fitted equipment - which costs way more than that.
B025 - Windscreen. Limit of £600 less £75 glass excess. You'll not get a genuine OEM BMW stamped replacement fitted for £525. Prepare to chip in!
272 - Limited Mileage. If exceeded, cover drops to absolute basic third party only. No fire or theft even. It only covers the other party's damage costs.
392 - Protected NCD. Only protects the number of claim free years (on a sliding step back scale). Your premiums will still increase with every claim.

Renewal due noon tomorrow; premium increased 'cos of pothole damage claim which my legal cover specifically includes but the lawyers have to assess a better than 50% chance of cost recovery success. Having checked (I'm told) with my local authority's history of denial and stonewalling they declined to file a claim, but as I'd already had to notify A-Plan of a potential claim to get them to ask the lawyers' advice in the first place then they had to register it on the MID. With no pothole claim filed, and no appropriately descriptive box to tick, it's gone down as a my fault accident which I now have to declare every year. It's so wrong that simply by asking your broker a question about whether or not to claim they must, by law, report it as "a notifiable incident". Grr. We'll see what new endorsements this year brings.

I checked others on line and rang around some mentioned on here. LV didn't even recognise my reg plate let alone a 2001 B3 Cab. Same with Tesco (I didn't know they did insurance). Ditto Churchill. Heritage, Lancaster and Footman James were way out. I filled in full details at moneysupermarket.com and was offered Sterling Insurance at £247.78 inclusive of legal cover, Protected NCD, courtesy car, personal injury, windscreen, etc., in fact everything I always add except UK/European breakdown which was available separately, and with a compulsory excess of £75 and zero voluntary excess. I did the same with underwriting@adrianflux.com and they came back with £193.76 so I rang Adrian Flux to check it out. Words fail me.

In verbally going through everything I'd already input on line, frustration was building. I answered "BMW" to "What make of vehicle?" "Is it imported?" I was asked. "Well it was made in Germany, but as it was first registered in the UK I think the answer you're looking for is No". "But you said it was from Germany". "Yes I did, but does that mean you count every Ferrari ever made as an import?" "Er, can I briefly put you on hold while I ask someone?" "No. Just put down no and let's press on". Eventually I'd repeated everything to their satisfaction and then they did actually put me on hold while they "got the best quote for me".

"Whoa, hang on. You've given me a quote on line." "But I have to check it." Seven minutes on hold with the occasional "sorry about this" and then the quote was read out to me starting with all the extras, goodies, call 'em whatever's. I had to interrupt and say just give me the price. "£800 sir." I didn't bother listening to how many pence but I kinda blew my top. A 32 minutes and 7 seconds call duration repeating what I'd already told them and a price four times what they'd earlier quoted as a "come on"! That stinks; their on line quotes are a con. Never again.

I calmed down and googled Sterling Insurance, the £247.78 quote and learned they are a name change of an Adrian Flux associate company. I logged off in disgust and went for a well deserved beer. Why does car insurance have to be like this?

I can not understand why LV has not recognised your Alpina :? , I have insured my Alpinas through them for over 20 years, one of which was a 2001 B3 Cab,in the last 2 years.

Unfortunately when you contact an insurer you are in the hands of the person who answers the phone :doh

I have my current E93 B3S BT Cab insured with them now, for £280 including protected NCB full UK and foreign breakdown cover :D

Also have my 440i GC with them at the same price.

Might be worth going back to them and ask to speak to someone who knows about Alpinas.

Classic couldn't really help in the time available, but thanks anyway hap.

B10BRW. I didn't get to a human. LV website https://secure.lv.com/car/A/carQuote;js ... 1s2&aff=lv doesn't recognise my reg and under "Find Car" it only recognises Alpina B3 from 2012 onwards. Strange indeed.

Got sorted anyway via A-Plan but with a switch of underwriter from Highway (part of LV) to KGM. Same premium, £364 all in, but without silly policy endorsements, and a higher valuation without premium uplift. Seems even a small change of supplier can bring benefits and A-Plan were very helpful.

Out of interest: https://kgmus.co.uk/motor.html

KGM Motor Insurance was formed in 1957 and became one of the UK’s leading specialist Insurers with a team of knowledgeable and experienced Underwriters providing a wide variety of Motor Insurance products to suit your needs. In 2017 KGM Motor Insurance was sold and became KGM Underwriting Services Ltd and continues to provide the same level of great service, support, technical expertise and products to its Broker partners.

Howden Group Holdings Limited recently completed the acquisition of A-Plan Group, which KGM is part of. A-Plan, as one of the largest specialist insurance distribution groups in the UK, will create with Howden a new force in UK retail insurance market. The combined businesses will become one of the largest UK brokers, and the largest independent broker.

Just lack of time, hap. My policy ran out at 12 noon. Needed more than a couple of hours to go through things.
