I understand D5 being a disesel 5 series and B5 being petrol 5 series.
Why is my 2001 3.3 Touring not a B5 rather than the B10 it’s badged at ?

No idea but great question. i think Alpina called them B10 as their own model but then to be 'inline' with BMW moved to 5. You may also know there was a D10 for the European market.

B10 was used from the 80's e28's e34 and e39. Before that they were B9s! and B7 if turbo, all confusing. Changing to B5/6/7 made it a bit simpler
