D5 NOx emissions / ULEZ

Post by Thom » Mon Aug 21, 2023 12:51 pm

Hi All,

Just wondering whether any D5 owners have contacted Alpina asking for their NOx emissions?

I see that D4 owners are finding theirs to be eligible as an 'early adopter' and therefore eligible for ULEZ exception. Am I correct in thinking they have the same N57D30B engine?

What it actually depends on is the NOx emmisions level and can be reclassified

... and particulates too.

If your diesel car emmits less that 0.005g/Km particulates AND less than 0.08g/Km NOx, then it statisfies Euro 6 and hence meets the ULEZ requirements. The V5c may have this info incorrectly recorded (mine did, along with a blank "Euro status"), which is why the only way to categorically prove it meets the standard is to request a copy of the Certificate of Conformity from Alpina.

Heard back from Alpina @churchie386 & @charles.

No luck by the looks of it for my pre-Lci 63 plate F10 D5:

I have received feedback from our homologation department.
Unfortunately, I have to inform you that your D5 BiTurbo does not comply with the limits:

NOx = 0.1511g/km
Particulates = 0,0008g/km

For further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me

Unsure as to why the LCi meets Euro 6 as I thought the engine was unchanged?

Thanks for the information, Thom - I've updated the database.

As for why the LCI might be compliant, it may be the same engine but I presume that Alpina will have had to tweak the ECU to ensure that it satisfies Euro6 (diesel) standards

Same thing with the base car (535d), the pre LCI were Euro 5 and LCI were Euro 6.

The power output stayed the same, just the emissions dropped.

Would be nice to think we could get the later software flashed into the ECU and then re certified as compliant...

Even if you could flash the ECU with the later software, the problem is you'd need a Certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer to present to TfL to confirm it met the Euro 6 standard. I guess an alternative is to have the "flashed" car tested to Euro6 independently by a recognised certification body (not sure anyone offers that to the public and homologation testing costs $$$££€€s for manufactures ... which is partly why Alpina sold to BMW).

I was thinking along the lines of Alpina providing BMW with the cal file(s), BMW doing the update for any customer wanting it and then Alpina issuing the cert to the customer after BMW confirm to Alpina that a particular car has been done. You could then apply for exemption.
Obviously BMW / Alpina would charge for the work.
And providing the software is the only difference.

Probably more wishful thinking than anything!
