Car covers, any recommendations?

Post by Corky1710 » Mon Jul 10, 2023 1:23 pm

Hi All,

Fed up with the tree sap and bird poo covering my Alpina D4. Has anyone got experience and would recommend a good all weather outdoor car cover? Don't mention this to my paint detailer, he'd throw a fit!!

Thoughts and advice welcome!

I just bought one from Halfords, size large adequately fits BMW 2 series 2 door car. Was 52 pounds with car club discount. However it has attachments which mean you can put the straps under the vehicle and secure it, I don't use these and have taped them up to prevent scratching the vehicle when putting on and taking off. I might consider cutting them off.

However, its far better than the non lined BMW covers I have owned and far cheaper. We have large Oak tree outside our front door and these have preservation orders on them so the sap and debris falls on vehicles parked in my garage space, which is room for 5 cars. I dont own 5 btw.

I use indoor covers, and always manufacturer supplied, fleece lined. However, I only fit one if the car is spotlessly clean and dry ie prior to a short-medium term storage period.

I would be very wary of an outdoor cover for a number of reasons, especially as you are so careful about caring for your car:-
1) outdoor covers will make the car sweat whatever they claim as we live in a temperate, quite volatile environment in the UK. (same as non fleece for indoor where temperature and humidity shocks make the cars sweat and rot unseen under a cover)
2) they need tying down or the wind will free them and batter them against your paintwork. Not a good look.
3) If you throw the cover on a dirty car, it will scratch the paint
4) if you throw it on a wet car, it'll grow stuff
5) When removing the cover, you need to ensure that the side which contacts the car does not make contact with any grit etc and it stays off the floor. I fold my fleece cover into itself whilst its on the car, finishing with a cube of cover on the roof before removing it. The inner face never contacts anything other than the car, or itself to avoid putting grit between the cover and the car.

Yes, I'm very careful and thoughtful maintaining our cars  Not much help to you really, but may give you food for thought about using one: I would only use one on a long term stored car outside, but with full strapdown to stop it moving as any friction will damage the paint. We live in a windy area, and that would probably make me say 'no' to using one here.

Hi Anthony,

I went with this team and the bepoke cover work very well. Nice soft interior so no scratches in the wind as the cover fits snug and wont flap.
