Is this the beginning of the end for Diesel cars.
Morning all,
Listening to various reports this morning that the latest budget will propose a 15% increase in Diesel Fuel with VAT on top so more like 25%. Which would mean diesel would be around £2,20 per litre.
I see two things happening, the cost of running a diesel car is going to become uneconomical which will then drop the price of the Diesel cars as no one will want to buy them. Are we being screwed by the Goverment, probably.
If Diesels are forced off the road, I'm afraid it will be the end of my Alpina ownership as petrol Alpina's are not viable or affordable for me personally.
Great news as I've just booked my car in for a complete suspension replacement. . . . . . .

This would be terrible as we have just replaced our stolen X5 with another one that is Diesel and this is our main car

Stealth taxation via fiscal drag is one thing - most people simply don’t notice - but there are too many voters who drive diesels, who most definitely would notice, for such a policy to not cause utter apoplexy, especially given the ongoing squeeze on people’s disposable incomes. Not only would it (I suspect) generate a backbench Tory revolt, it would be an absolutely sure fire way of getting obliterated at the next election.
I could of course be completely wrong - the people in charge do seem to have a pathological inability to read the room - but I can’t see this happening any time soon.

All short-termism, 3 years ago the government were practically recommending them until the VW scandal broke, then it’s been the devil’s fuel again.
I would happily own a D3 again and then either a D4 or B4, petrol duty will catch up soon, it’s a pity the hydrogen fuel cell technology hasn’t advanced more, but neither has the charging network.
Big news for London ULEZ too today.
The Manchester zone is under review but only currently was going to be applied to older commercial diesels.

I thought the proposed fuel duty rise was on both petrol and diesel, not just diesel?

The proposal in the OBR Report on Fiscal Responsibility was for a 23% increase in fuel duty which equates to an increase of around 12p/Litre

Cough….VW emissions…cough = uk gov “diesel has nothing to do with us”….
I’d have a D3 or D4 all day long, the torque off the mark is a joy.

I’d have a D3 or D4 all day long, the torque off the mark is a joy.
It is; indeed, I am very aware the D3 Biturbo 2009 is not the quickest thing on the road and many "normal" new cars would be quicker but it's quick enough and responsive enough to surprise and few people.
