Damp Rear Footwell

Post by Avtar » Sat Nov 12, 2022 2:36 pm

Hi All,

This morning I was changing my mats to rubber winter ones and noticed that the rear driver's side footwell is very damp. I cannot see any visbible water drips or stains, but it is quite damp, any ideas??

Also do you guys think this kind of issue be covered under the BMW Warranty?

Thanks

Sounds like the Vapor Barrier.

Just take the door cards off and reseal with windscreen sealant or " 3M 08008 Black Super Weatherstrip And Gasket Adhesive 147ml " off ebay.

Don't use silicone sealant.

Plenty of videos on youtube, type in "Vapor Barrier e39"

I had it on the E36 a long time ago. I was only using it for short trips, so ended up with the interior condensation never fully drying out as the heat didn’t penetrate there under all the foam. I drove around for months with the carpet wedged up waiting to see a leak and it didn’t manifest itself, the carpet foam dried out as it was airing then. Just like the condensation in the E36 headlights.
The door membrane is a good call too. Others have found blocked drain holes in the sills or the door seal leaking very slightly causing it to run into the lowest point and build up over time.

Also, worth considering things like the roof seals. It was a problem on the E93, but not sure whether the F33 is similarly affected.

So had the car up on a ramp today, checked all drainage plugs, all good. It appears it may be the rubber seal attached to the roof above the driver's door as there are water marks in one spot so will focus there and see if that solves the issue, will check how much a replacement is?

Let us know how you get on. Have you ever ben advised to do any preventative maintenance on the roof seals and mechanism?

Thanks for that tip, it's for a B4 convertible. I lifted out the rear seat and there was no water or dampness and also the drainage holes were all clear also which made think it was not a Vapour Barrier issue. If the seal renew does not work I will look again, however, there is no water sloshing when driving?
