Winter Solution Assistance

Post by Avtar » Mon Oct 31, 2022 12:02 pm

Hi All,

My wife's X5 was stolen last week whilst we were abroad and I do not know when we will be able to replace it and this was our main car. This leaves us with one car to use, my B4 Convertible, so in anticipation I may need to source Winter Wheels and Tyres, any suggestions and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Sorry to hear of the theft, hope you don’t have too much of a battle with the insurers.

You could source a set of genuine F3X Alpina wheels in 19’s or 20’s and add winter tyres. The official winter wheel/tyre set up was 19’s for F3X Alpina models.

When I had my F31 D3 I chose to fit 18 inch F3X BMW wheels and winter tyres because it offered more wheel and tyre options, plus it was significantly cheaper and easier than sourcing a set of used Alpina wheels. I sourced a set of good used 18 inch wheels with TPMS sensors and then had new tyres fitted. The only downside is that they aren’t as nice to look at as the Alpina option.

I believe nearly all F3X 18 inch wheels will clear the front brakes as they are shared with the larger engined F3X platform cars.

Hope that helps.

As it’s only temporary I’d be scouring eBay etc for a used set of BMW wheels with winter tyres.

Last year I shopped around and picked up a set of two Goodyear Ultragrip Winter fronts with 2 slightly wider rears from different suppliers and for a great price compared to a set of new Michelin Pilot Alpins and the Goodyears have favourable reviews too.

It’s been proved that that winter tyres provide better grip than summer tyres below around 6 degrees outside temperature, they save on wearing out the summers, and save the risk of kerbing the Alpina alloys in a slide too.

I’m probably on a tighter budget than most on here at the moment, it’s a bit of a no brainier for me but I’m on the side of the West Pennines, a mile from Winter Hill, and catch a lot of weather.
