Alpina B10 3.5i

Post by Marc.l » Tue Sep 06, 2022 6:46 pm

Hi

New here but quite well known on the E9 CSL forums

I’m starting a new restoration project, just purchased a E34 Alpina B10 3.5i, black with blue and grey interior, recaro electric seats with blue door panels and interior plastics.

It’s in very solid condition and completely unmolested, it’s done 30,000 KLM’s from new but has sat in a barn uncovered for 14 years. I have a few questions…..

Firstly are the brakes standard 535i breaks ? My first job will be to overhaul the breaking system so the car is rolling and then get the engine running. I have a spare m30 turbo engine I built that I was going to put in my E9 but until I’ve had a proper look at the engine in the car I won’t make that call. Are the B10s worth keeping stock as far as values are concerned?

Pictures as the car was found with over 12 years of grime …..

Yes, I live in east Asia to miss the European winter and the car is originally a import from Japan. I’ve paid £600 for it ….

the recaros were standard on bi turbos but i guess an option on the NA B10. Japanese market cars of the era tend to be good spec and very often auto on this model

the brakes are standard 535i, if you've paid £600 which is essentially nothing/free then do as you please but i'd probably keep it as it is. Especially as the mileage is so low

more pictures please!

I will see if it has a dash plate, tbh I’ve not seen the car yet, my wife went and did the deal and had the car moved to a safe location. It’s now being steam cleaned and assessed. It has zero rust, inside is a bit of a mess. Good thing is it’s unmolested and complete. I will then decide if I restore or break it for parts.

I believe technically all E34 B10 3.5's are 3.5/1 which was ALPINA nomenclature to denote an evolution/re-use of an existing model name. This is similar to the E39 B10 V8's which with the LCI became V8/1. For some reason from what I've seen, the Japanese market cars more often than not have a boot badge with the /1 but UK cars almost never did and the European cars are closer to 50:50 with/without.

3rd'd! The images on the Archive are from 2007/08 when it went through the Yokohama auction.

The stamped VIN is wrapped onto 2 lines in the E34's. This is a clearer image from another B10 3.5/1. So as hap said, the last three digits (049 in this case) is the build number which should correspond to the number of the plaque in front of the gear shifter.

Thank you all for the help !!

The car has now been moved to a secure location and I now have £650 invested in it or around $500 dollars.

In the boot are the original car mate bound in green, a unused spare wheel and even a full tool kit.
Tomorrow the interior is being removed and the seats will be going to my trimmer friend to be re-trimmed. He’s going to strip the seats so all the motors can be be stripped and cleaned. Now got to decide on trim for seats and door panels, I’m thinking blue leather on the sides and grey suede on the cushions with a Alpina two tone blue stripe. Strangely the original seats are all have green piping, that really dosnt match the blue interior or the grey alacantara.

Also I can confirm it’s number 464 and is indeed the one in the archives from the Tokyo auction. It was apparently brought over to the Philippines by an American service man, who on returning home sold it to a local. It broke down after a service with a broken rocker arm and has been stored since.

I will start a new thread as I restore it if any one is interested

That’s great news!

You can’t decide the ALPINA VIN using an online decoder. You need to use the BMW VIN which will begin WBA and be struct through. Probably on the windscreen scuttle panel.

It might be worth getting an ALPINA Certificate of Delivery as I suspect you car will’ve had a custom Lavalina interior and if you’re trying to keep original that’s the best way to find out what it should be.
