Dent removal
Hi Team,
Long timoe no speak and Merry Xmas.
Some bugger managed to put a small dent in No19s' driver door with their door in a car park.
I got a dent man in and he wants to drill a small hole in the door on the side ( where the door closes, covered by a grommet on completion) to get to the correct area but I stopped him.
Would we not be better to go in via removal of the door card and not put holes in the car unless needed!!! He seemed worried by this incase putting the door card back presented issues with broken clips.
I am no dent expert but though I should check , I dont want holes in No19. I love her too much. She is otherwise well.
Is it the case of getting some clips and telling him to not be lazy?
bar a broken NS headlamp, being repelaced with a whole new unit.
Hope you are all well
Your thoughts are most welcome.

Re: Dent removal
Surely even a few broken clips is preferable to a hole drilled into the car. Not least as swarf could fall down inside the door and start to rust over time. Smart choice I think, get someone to take the door card off and if a few clips break then replace them only a few quid.

Re: Dent removal
I'd agree with this. Surely a competent dent removal expert will be experienced at removing door cards and trims etc to do the job properly. I've certainly never heard of anyone drilling holes in the door but it sounds a terrible idea to me. You did the right thing stopping him.

Re: Dent removal
It's very easy to remove the door cards and membrane
See here for a post I made regarding installing additional door speakers and sound deadening material to the doors as it includes the necessary info

Re: Dent removal
It could be that the dent is in line with the strengthening bar that runs across the door and therefore not accessible once the door card is off. However there is no need to drill a hole whatsoever if this is the case. As said remove the door card is surely the easiest way. There are nails that glue to a panel and the nails can be pulled on to ease the dent out and filled and resprayed if need.

Re: Dent removal
I believe this is quite common practice in the dent removal world.
Quicker and easier, especially when they have dealership contracts and are paid per dent / car.
You did right stopping him, what a vandal!
Did he ask or did you just happen to catch him?

Re: Dent removal
I’d get a second opinion, I’ve had a really good dent guy out this week to work on my wife’s car and also take two small parking dents out of a rear door on my F31, no drilling needed at all with mine.

Re: Dent removal
Thanks all for your comments. He asked and I stopped him from drilling.
I will get him back to go in via the door card and let you know what happens. Merry Xmas all...

Re: Dent removal
As an ex car stereo fitter can confirm taking door cards off is easy. In fact personally took mine off for the dent removal guy on mine! clips also should be replaced on removal as they may loose their bite. For a few pence / pounds?drilling a hole sounds drastic...never heard of dent removal companies doing this
