D3 bi turbo 408
Hi all,
I'm looking into Alpina ownership, and 408 has captured my heart already. Its on almost 48k but the backstreet trader has no history on the car at all. It is deep blue with cream interior, but not heated ?
The engine purrs, and aside from a small sludge build up on the crankcase breather pipe, it all seems fine.
Is the missing history a no go? Does anyone know the history of the car? Is it something I'd be able to track down in the future?
Sorry for the long winded post

Re: D3 bi turbo 408
Hi I think this interior was likely be retro fitted, very few came with full leather
Service could be traced if it’s been at bmw but a pain due to data protection. If there is no paperwork it would be very risky and also if you wanted to sell on. Also I’d think the price would need adjustment if no service
Do they have any paperwork?

Re: D3 bi turbo 408
#408 left the factory with standard Impuls Cloth Leather, it looks like the leather was probably fitted by Sytner when it was first delivered, but without the original sales invoice probably impossible to know for sure.
I don’t know any history/previous owners of this one unfortunately and as hap said, buying a car with no proof of servicing/history is a big gamble. Added to that, imo really low mileage on a diesel can be quite a problem as they need longer runs to get up to temp/regen dpf’s etc which can cause issues later on.

Re: D3 bi turbo 408
Thanks for the info, the people selling are at best dodgy. I dont mind the interior as it suits the car, but the history is a problem as its nearly 10years with no proof of servicing.
Its up for £11k and a wrestle on my mind. I do long journeys, mostly motorway. Id look to service and cleanse the egr/dpf system before putting it into service. The engine was really quiet compared to my 165k 318d but have read a bit about these cars, the look, ride and handling and performance in general are tipping the scales .

Re: D3 bi turbo 408
It’s definitely a buyers market for D3 BTs at the moment. Plenty have been around on dealer forecourt’s for a while.

Re: D3 bi turbo 408
Some great suggestions there, thanks
Re: D3 bi turbo 408
I must admit when I read the post I was expecting the worst, but having seen the car on Autotrader I can tell why you like it because I think it looks great. The leather works well with the paint, and those wheels and deco stripes set it all off nicely.
It's annoying that they haven't put the rear numberplate on straight, but the presence of the original mats is positive. I would be suspicious of the mileage though since one of the main reason why people "misplace" the service history is so that it can't contradict any mileage adjustment that might have been carried out. If you look at all the others currently for same they are all much higher in mileage as befits the usage profile of a 10 year old diesel saloon. Of course it could all be legit, but how can you tell.
So, if everything else checks out and you plan to keep it a few years then aim for a price equivalent to the same car with double the mileage. Then keep receipts for everything you do to it and in a few years any future buyer will see that it's been looked after and the lack of history won't be such an issue.
For FWIW I think we are going to see a lot more of this going forward. I hear that all the "car buying" companies such as WBAC throw away all the paperwork from any car that they take in except the stamped service book citing GDPR. If that service book isn't present to begin with then all of a sudden a car with perfect service history becomes one with none, because all the evidence has been disposed of.
It's mindless, but there we go

Quite a minefield with pricing too as they range from 7k to 12.5K. The good news from my side is they are all higher priced than I paid for mine and the average across the board is nicely higher. So overall I'm happy.

The MOT History does seem to back up the low mileage, annual tests with moderate increases in mileage most years (2014-16 it was tramping on a bit).

Re: D3 bi turbo 408
#408 does look super nice to be fair - I’ve just had a look at the advert. As James said, the colour, wheels, deko and interior all go together perfectly. Very Alpina.
The lack of history is very annoying - I can’t believe the history is getting binned by dealers in the name of GDPR. However, I’d like to think a clean suite of MOTs with no advisories is a sign the car has been looked after. People have replaced tyres etc before they have flagged up on the MOT. Surely a good sign?
I guess you’ve got to go with your gut feel. If it looks like a well maintained car then hopefully you will be OK. It’s certainly easy to spot a tatty car that hasn’t been loved.
Good luck!
