The car only needs to be Euro 3 compliant.
Check out all the Petrol E39 / E46's on ebay, All state ULEZ exempt.

Not according to the TfL database when I tried my details ...

Their website clearly states Euro 4 for NOx for petrol cars - i.e. less than 0.08g/km

It may be that E39/E46 petrol cars produce less than this but because they are classified as Euro 3 (not 4) then we need to prove it based on an official emissions letter

Hi your right it says Euro 4 but cars after 2001 can meet the emissions standard. Maybe before ? if less than 0.08g/km like you said.

"The ULEZ is enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age."

I used to have a 2003 E39 Touring that was automatically exempt, i guess as it has the emissions stated on the V5.

As most Alpina's don't have any emissions stated on the V5 you have to get a certificate as i said before.

If you e-mail Alpina they should tell you the NOx emissions of your car before you pay 60 Euro's for the certificate.

I would of thought all 3.2, 3.3 B3, B10's should be exempt, not sure about V8's ?

Cheers

Thanks for the confirmation :)

Sytner's response could have been 'I'll look further into this' or something similar

Anyway, I knew from when I first looked at the original ULEZ zone that it was based on emissions but I became sidetracked and went astray by focusing on if our cars were Euro 4 complaint, rather than asking if our cars meet the emissions zone requirement

So we now know that TfL require NOx emissions less than 0.08g/km for petrol cars (not sure about diesels)

Next question, what about Birmingham and Bristol (to name but two)? Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of these before I start digging into the microprint ...

Thanks to this helpful post my 2001 B3 Touring is now ULEZ exempt. Sent the emission certificate from Alpina and V5C (remember to send all the pages) and few days later got the approval email.

I don't drive it in London much but its nice to know it complies the emission standards.

You will need to provide full VIN but be prepared for a lengthy response ...

Good news!

Alpina have just confirmed that the NOx emissions for my E46 B3S Touring (3.4) are 0.076 g/km.

This is below the Euro4 threshold of 0.080 g/km

Therefore, armed with an official "Emissions confirmation" from Alpina, I can now apply for ULEZ exemption for London and Bristol. I cannot comment about Birmingham or other proposed zones but I presume they will also have the same threshold.

Clearly something got lost in translation

Just to update, I heard back from them yesterday with the answer I wanted, replied immediately with the relevant documents they need and am now waiting for said official letter and an invoice for about 70 euros - everything is moving again in the right direction :D

Again, thanks to this thread I also contacted Alpina about my B10 V8 and they have confirmed it has a NOx reading of 0.0627g/km so below the 0.08g/km ULEZ limit. I've paid my invoice so just waiting for the cert from Alpina.
