Alpina Has No Intention Of Going Electric

Post by big blue » Fri Jul 30, 2021 9:02 am

According to an interview with Mr Bovensiepen by BimmerToday:

"We have customers especially in Europe who drive 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers a year. Nine months ago ago we carried out a customer survey on the subject of hybrids and BEVs (battery-electric vehicles). Our customers currently feel no demand for battery-electric models."

Looks like they are holding back on development despite BMW progressing with a wide range of options. Who would have thought that an Alpina \would have been even more exclusive as it chokes the carbon chicken to the end of its days. :)

Are they considering hydrogen instead I wonder?

... yet!

Remember that Alpina are highly dependent on the direction taken by BMW and my take on the statement from Andy B is that it's too early to develop electric powered vehicles - note the word "currently".

This will change given the direction of travel by legislators - be it BEV or HFCEV, which are both being developed by BMW.

The interesting curve ball is HICE (hydrogen internal combustion engine), which is based on diesel engine technology and significantly cheaper to develop than battery or fuel cell technology. Given the close relationship between Munich and Buchloe, particularly in terms of engine development, I wouldn't be surprised if this is something that Alpina are working on on behalf of BMW.

Based on my limited knowledge, HICE feels like the one I’d prioritise for as a long term solution.

Very much agree
I'm sure BMW trialed a hydrogen E38 a few years ago
There just simply isn't the infrastructure for everyone to have EVs

I’d take a hydrogen powered car, please not a huge motored and battery filled milk float with a fake engine noise.

Know a bit about this as involved in R&D, government corridors, innovation centres and know more of infrastructure and especially the hydrogen avenue. I also drive a milk float daily having been an 'early adopter' and its brilliant: sorry guys. :D but I know full well electric is only PART of the future mix, and everyone needs to accept fossil fuel is going to die soon or lots of humans will, and those of us with a need for it will run a classic or two where we're permitted to once the changeover occurs

The HICE is already out there. Has been for a number of years and has succesfully trialled. Wrightbus already produce a hydrogen combustion engine bus and it is being rolled out countrywide: this will assist in expanding hydrogen recharging stations for the rest of users. Toyota has a fleet of Mirai fuel cell units running around the UK as part of the trials for the future hydrogen supply chain. It's highly likely the success of Wrightbus' HICE will transpose into HGV's to replace their diesel units once the recharging system expands to enable regular refills for them, and local deliveries are likely to be assisted by train and electric van combos in a revolutionary new system which is well into R&D. Mr Musk's tunnelling has massive potential too: the UK is getting into that too.

As stated already by the sages here, Alpina won't have a choice and they will have to follow legislation and take on board the ban on sales of fossil fuelled vehicles, so they will be watching over the BMW R&D engineers' shoulders to see which way to jump. Customer feelings of grief at the loss of fossil combustion just won't hold water, I'm afraid. And that can only be a good thing.

It's all going to be quite a surprise to many, but it's going to be an interesting ride for us

Cheers
Bobbly

I keep thinking this. The market for classic and interesting ICE cars is still creeping up, but at what point will the realisation come that at some point they will be totally worthless? If we can't buy regular petrol, or it becomes prohibitively expensive to do so, who is going to want a car that you can't use? I'm sure some poster cars (F40 etc) will be seen as art but for 99.9% of cars on the road, they will literally be worth zero.

Even if we are allowed to drive them in a limited capacity, we'll probably have rocks thrown at us for killing the planet.

If the ban on selling new Derv or Petrol is 2030, and someone gets one in Dec 2029, how long can they run it for? My old E39 still going after 22 years, so that would bring it up to 2051. Therefore the whole phase out of Petrol and Derv cars may take a long time?

No doubt there will be draconian taxes and rules and restrictions, by which time I shall be dead. (No clapping please).

I think this will be the key - the car might be new and able to last a long time, but will you be able to use it?

I think petrol will become less available sooner than diesel. My rational is based on commercial vehicles (lorries and vans) being mainly diesel powered and will continue to be for a good while yet, even if EV become the norm for retail / general public. I understand heavier vans over 3.5t will have to go pollution-free by 2035, not 2030, and HGVs no doubt later than that. Perhaps I will have to fill up my soon to arrive D3 along side the lorries.
