B10 V8 gearbox problem

Post by al cowan » Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:10 pm

Hi all, been using the B10 over the weekend. I was close to getting home today and noticed the revs had went very high in a 40mphg zone. Tried to manually gpo up the box but would got up to 3/4/5 and then back to 2. The car won't go any higher than 2nd gear in auto or manual. There is a decent clunk also when putting it into gear. Checked the oil level in the box and all was good. Any ideas anyone or anyone had similar problems? I intended to get the box out over the winter to change the T/C but looks like that may be brought forward a bit now!

An excessively slipping TC will not prevent usage of all the gears, just surging revs - so I wouldn't suspect this as the problem area straight away.

However, these symptoms sound very similar to something I experienced a while back such that, once warmed up and used for my 40 minute town-motorway-town commute, the gearbox started playing up, revs surged in low gears and selecting higher gears in switchtronic mode became problematic.

At first I thought that it might be the valve chest solenoids playing up but detailed diagnosis revealed a cracked D drum in the gearbox which was causing fluid to pass through the crack once properly warm and the the crack had expanded in the heat, thereby throwing the gearbox into a wobbly!!!

I hope this isn't the case but if you need a good gearbox specialist, I can recommend Stephens Engineering in Ware, Herts (if that is anywhere near you).

Hope this helps

Hi Charles, sounds like it coulds be this. I am just off to get the box out of the car and will have a shop about for getting the box rebuit and the T/C changed as that was starting to get clattery anyway. The ZF agent in Glasgow here wants over 2K to refurb it.

Alasdair, I was looking into getting my box serviced and travelling from Aberdeen to Glasgow but my brother who lives in Dundee suggested a company in Forfar who he has used to get an auto box repaired. They did a good job and seem to have a good reputation. Not sure how they are with ZF but I was planning on giving them a call to check and get costs.

Gearbox out after an afternoon under the car. Not a pleasant job as the top bolts are a pain to get out, access is tight. Need to replace all the bolts to hold the manifold to the exhaust as had to chop them all. The back gearbox mount bushes were also separated as well so thaqt won't help either.

I had a recommendation about BA transmissions in Keighley so will ring them tomorrow and see what they have to say. I am off work Wednesday so may nip down with it and drop it off if favourable.

Hi Alasdair, been watching this with interest as I think these cars all seem to need a gearbox fix at some point. Sounded like a fun job getting it out but hope you get it sorted.

That's what it cost me 5 years ago when I had it done - full gearbox rebuild including refurbishment of the TC.

The box went off yesterday to BA Trasmissions. They have quoted £1200 including refurb of the torque convertor so not too bad at all. That comes with a years/12k mile warranty too.

Sounds like an excellent price - clearly things are cheaper the further north one goes!!!

The box should hopefully be there today so they are going to ring and let me know what they find. Fingers crossed it's not all knackered. They quoted 3 to 5 day turnaround so will see what happens. We are off to Matlock for a weeks holidays next Friday so will hopefully pick it up on the trip home so saves a bit of hassle getting it back.
