Advice on changing windscreen E46 at dealership

Post by hap » Sun May 23, 2021 4:54 pm

Hi all my original screen has seen better days so considering changing but heard a lot of horror stories. My insurance I think allow an option to go to BMW at 100 or 75 for auto glass to come and fit. I would prefer a genuine screen mine has auto dimming mirror and auto wipers
This is the numbers at the bottom of screen
Anyone had theirs done at BMW and what was the process do the insurance co liaise with the dealer and then the excess is deducted? TIA

What I would suggest hap is to find out who fits the glass at BMW. It could be that they use Autoglass anyway.

Any dealer would not have a specialist screen fitter and use a third part. Happy to be corrected. If that is the case then you are better off sourcing a screen and finding a specialist to fit it like Glass tec - a guy called Paul runs it puts a lot of pride in his screen fitting...

You can specify the glass with the usual mobile suspects. Just takes longer. Make the call and run it past them

Hi Hap, how did you get on with this, I’m considering the same for my F11 as my screen has lots of minor chips.

Yes, had this done on a E65. B7. The original screen got a massive stone chip and cracked. Contacted A Plan Thatcham who informed me the insurer said to go to National windscreens at Crawley. The Lady who was the manager said "you really don't want to be here luv, we can only fit a clear screen and not a tinted one like currently fitted and we cannot test your auto windscreen wipers or your auto headlight diming facility".

I went back to A Plan and explained I was paying a premium for like for like replacement, they agreed, however, I had to take it to the Main ALPINA dealership at Nottingham. The screen was replaced and whilst it cost me 75 pounds excess I was informed it was 1400 pounds, its a big screen on the 7 series. Insurer was Marker Study.
