Am I correct in thinking that as this is the older design 4.6 it either doesn't have vanos or it has the older simpler (less borky) version? I may of course be completely wrong for only the second time since 1974.....
I'm sure you'll be fine as long as you're aware of the E39 weaknesses and you sound like you are!

You'll need to double check as I think Vanos may have arrived as early as 1999, vanos only came in one variant as far as I'm aware for the E39 so you either have it on inlets or you don't.

Enjoy, they're pretty good cars given their age :)

Only the B10 V8's with the F4 and F4/1 engines (based on the M62B44TU) had VANOS. The earlier F3 engines with the M62B44 didn't have it.

The rough change over point in the production run was #485, so #388 should be an F3 Kenny. You can double-check this using the ALPINA VIN number which will be in the form: WAPBA46*******388

Below is the analysis for #372 which is the nearest build I know. I'd expect yours to be exactly the same bar the last 2 digits.

Fabulous knowledge there Sir, many thanks for that. I had feeling it could be on the cusp either way and I'll confirm when it arrives on Friday. I am hoping it doesn't as it's one less 'design feature' to give hassle. Passed it's mot today with only 2 very small advisories (headlight adjuster and couple of tyre rubbing marks from spacers which are now removed thankfully!) so all going well I might have something to play with at the weekend... :dance

Well it's here! Haven't done many miles being busy at work, son's birthday etc but should get a better run today. Unfortunately the a/c isn't and only 1 of the keys starts the car so hoping to get those resolved. Took to the local specialist yesterday for a cursory check over. He plugged it in and we found many logs of faults for engine, a/c, dash etc etc. We have cleared all the codes as we have no idea how historical some of them might be and I shall run about for a few weeks and we shall plug it in again and see what comes up then plan any service/work required from there.

Hi Alasdair, wasn't far from Glencarse myself in the B10 seeing what worked and what will need work! There were loads of bikes out and about making the most of the weather!

Off tomorrow to get the a/c checked/re-gassed as required.

A client cancelled late afternoon today giving me opportunity to use the furniture clinic steering wheel rescue kit. The steering wheel was awful looking with greasy lumpy bits all over and you could barely see the coloured stitching and change up arrows. Worst of all it felt terrible in the hand so ordered yesterday and arrived today. Only time will tell if it's any good and if it lasts but after scrubbing, sanding (!), degreasing, alcohol wiping, more sanding, more wiping, 3 coats of binding agent and a half dozen coats of dye it is looking and feeling a lot better. Got carried away and used Gliptone deep cleaner on all the leathery interior then Gliptone conditioner and stuck it back in the garage to dry/soak in overnight.....I've got the white cotton gloves ready for tomorrow just in case..... :mrgreen:

Hah! Mrs P said, did you take a before pic....? :roll: This is one from the dealer, not great but you can see the scratches, discolouration and how grubby the stitching was. It felt even worse to hold. For £23 quid, if it lasts a couple of years then happy days and there is probably enough left in the kit do do at least one more resto if required or even just top up the dye.

I find the Gliptone stuff very good indeed. I've used it on e30's, SAAB, Merc, Porsche & TVR and it more or less does what it says on the tin. I haven't used their dye kits though, just cleaners and conditioner but the leather always feels and looks much better afterwards.

The wheel looks great. Can I ask some daft questions. 1. wheel off I guess, 2. did you also work on the airbag cover, 3. how did you work on the stitching, it really pops now?

left the wheel on but steering lock applied (heh, something that works... :lol: ). The kit contains degreasers and alcohol cleaner and I used an old microfibre cloth and got scrubbing. It took 3 or 4 clean ups but each pass gave an improvement and the blue/green stitching really cleaned up well. After that it was sanding time which was bit daunting but necessary to get the surface prepped, then more cleaning with the alcohol. The binding agent is at least 3 coats before dyeing which is a build-up of several coats being careful not to put black onto the stitching! All in took around 3 hrs and then left overnight to dry but they say you can use after 3hrs of drying.

I have used Gliptone cleaners and conditioners for years on various cars, e30 BMW, SAAB, Merc, Porsche, TVR etc and I really like it. The cleaner does work (pic above) and the conditioner makes the leather 'puff' and feel and look much better. I will use it on the wheel after a few weeks of curing first.

meant to say, I used the degreaser and alcohol solution on the centre pad as well, stay clear of the Alpina centre badge, it doesn't like the alcohol much......
