C95 Softline Centre Cap shocker

Post by B10BOV » Fri Apr 09, 2021 9:48 pm

What do they say about letting sleeping dogs lay....

Last month I had my Softline wheels and centre caps refurbished by Lepsons, with new seals and badges.

I am off on a GRRC Driving day tomorrow, so thought that I would just check my tyre pressures.

Caps came off very easily, without needing to use my Horsham Forge centre cap tool.

As for putting them back on...I managed one! What is the black art with getting them back on.

I was trying to put them on, with the lock exactly opposite the valve, in line with a spoke. I tried a little bit of GT85 spray on the seals to ease the process, but only ended up bending, and almost shearing my key.

Of course, I then went for the spare...and it didn't even fit in the lock, ha ha.

In desperation, I sought solace with Mr Timpson, but despite trying to cut an almost identical DOM key, that wouldn't fit either, a fraction too broad apparently.

So,....tomorrow I will go capless, but need to source another set of keys. I have seen some posts about brass keys, where are people sourcing these?

Picture of mine below.

Thanks a lot, Tom

I had the same problems with my car. The previous owner had the wheels refurbished and they added too much laquer on the wheel and hence the caps would not fit.

I had them refurbished again and this time they fit. As for the keys, find an old school cobbler, Timpsons are useless IMHO. I found an old cobbler who made me 3 copies of each key for tenner.

Depends who you get IMO. Timpsons cut me two sets from a worn key and they worked perfectly.

i take the lock/centre cap or two with me so when they've cut it you can check there and then. They often need adjusting the new keys to work
