G2x Spare Wheel

Post by churchie386 » Fri Apr 02, 2021 12:44 pm

Matt Prior's writing is this week's Autocar about the lack of spare wheels got me thinking ...

Is there a space saver spare wheel avilable for G2x B3/D3 (M340i/M340d)? And is there room for one under the luggage compartment floor? In fact what is under the floor ... odds n sods (smuggling) compartments, bass speaker for H/K sound?

Sal could you take a picture.

Hi churchie, the short answer to the question of whether there’s room for a space saver under the boot floor is no I’m afraid.

As you can see from the pics there are two shallow stowage compartments; the one nearest the boot aperture is also fairly narrow and has deeper recesses on either side with a first aid kit on the right and a wallet containing the towing eye, locking wheel nut socket and alloy wheel cover keys. This space can also be used to store the load cover, as pictured. The larger compartment houses the tyre goo and air compressor.

I didn’t fancy taking apart the boot floor trim, but I was able to lift it enough to get a compromised view, though not any pics - the main AGM battery is under there as well as what looks like it might be the amp for the H/K system. I believe the subs are under the front seats though I’m not 100% on that.

I’m sure space savers will be available from BMW.

I bought one off eBay for the F25, it came unused with a carrying cover. It is massive despite being a 155 50 and there is not a lot of chance to store under the floor.

Thanks Sal, thats "worse" than I thought. I see you went with the functional plastic BMW load mat rather than the sumptuous Alpina carpet mat - given you have young ones, I understand your logic.

I found this on another forum for the G20; perhaps they do one for G21. It'll consume a fair amount of space, but favourable to getting stranded or recovered when travelling in remote areas (e.g. Highlands and NC500, these are some of the first trips in my D3S).

If I had the Alpina mat I’d just end up stowing it away as I’d hate to get it dirty! Even if I keep the car 10 years the one thing the next owner will get is pristine, as-new floor mats.

If I didn’t need the boot space I’d seriously consider just flinging a spare in there; the missus had a puncture recently in her A6 and the tyre goo was useless so had to call out breakdown assistance. Fortunately she was in town when it happened.

I carry a full size alloy spare in the boot of my E61 B5. No room under the floor for anything and I don't fancy driving any distance on a space-saver anyway. One of the benefits of a touring, I still have some boot space even with the big alloy in there and I don't ever carry much in there

I agree, I don’t want to go any distance on a space saver but I bent an alloy last year and had to get my other half to bring me one of the winters so I could get home, a 100m round trip. This I would like to avoid in future.

Crikey, that was a lot of damage! Makes sense what you want to do - that would use up a lot of brownie points...

A muppet in a shit box transit pulled out of an offside Jen into the middle of the road, so avoiding action via verge. Pumped a bottle of tyre seal in before I realised it was this bent, bit of a numpty move. If you have a damaged wheel rather than a puncture AA won’t recover you!

Lucky it was a forged alloy as repaired no problem rather than a 400 quid replacement. Still paying the brownie points though.

Given the front and rear rims are different widths (and likely different offsets too) which do you carry as a full size spare? I assume the front, as a rear will foul the inner arches when steering.

I wouldn't like to travel far on a space saver either, but when on holiday with a boot full of kit for the family a space saver does save space over a full size wheel.

Yes it's a full size front like you guessed. Came with the car from previous owner, along with another full set of wheels with winters on. I have 9 Alpina wheels in total :)

Speak to www.alloywheelsdirect.com, I got my space saver for my D4 from there for £227 but had to source the jack and bag from ebay, as BMW don't sell them. One thing to watch is that you will probably need a spacer disk to get the space saver wheel to clear the Alpina brake caliper, I got mine from https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07T2MX6B ... TE_3p_dp_1

A lot of hassle for sure but I had a spate of tyres go on me over winter 2019/20 and got sick of waiting for tail lift trucks. Did get a christmas card from my local tyre fitter though...

The pic of Adam’s warped alloy made me cringe.

It’s definitely one of the benefits of optioning the 19” Dynamic wheels on the G21. I do love the look of the Classics but the (lack of) profile in the tyres borders on ludicrous and given the roads in the locality are more crater-riddled than the Moon I could well see the need for a rim repair or even replacement in my future.
