VED changes.
VED changes.
If I've got this right the pre 23/03/2006 VED rate seems to have disappeared in the budget and everything is now emissions based. How or where do I find the emissions rating on my 2001 B3 cab? Many thanks.

Re: VED changes.
I think you have that wrong. Even if the VED system was changed it wouldn’t be retrospective. If you have the emissions Info it is on the V5. Your car will be classed as a PLG over 1600cc.

Re: VED changes.
Phil is right - these tax changes are not retrospective
My 2003 B3S has emissions at 235g/km which would, in mainstream cars, give it a tax rate near £400pa but it is classified as PLG so I pay £265pa at the moment (edited to show correct PLG rate)
When the D3 appeared, Sytner started registering the cars based on emissions, so owners benefited from lower tax rates associated with their emissions.
Then in April 2017, the emission-based taxation changed to a combination of emissions and car value, so within the family fleet, the 66 plate 1.0l Polo and 65 plate 2.0 Tdi Seat Leon both cost £20pa but the 17 plate 1.0l Polo costs me £150pa
What this means is that your tax rate/calculation is based on the year that your car was registered and how it was registered. Your 2001 car will be taxed on a PLG basis, a 2010 car will be emissions-based and a 2018 car will be taxed on the combined emissions/value calculation.
Hope this helps

Re: VED changes.
Here is a link to the .gov website showing the tax rate rules
If I've interpreted it correctly, then a summary for ALPINA owners is as follows:
For ALPINAs registered before 1 March 2001 and treated as PLG, annual tax = £270
For ALPINAs registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 and treated as PLG, annual tax = £265
For ALPINAs registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 and taxed on emissions, annual tax ranges from £0 - 580 (depending on emissions)
For ALPINAs registered on or after 1 April 2017 and taxed on emissions/list price over £40k, annual tax = £475 (for 2nd to 6th years after registration then drops to £150 from 7th year after registration)
All prices correct at time of searching the website (i.e 4th March 2021)

Re: VED changes.
Thanks everyone. If only DVLA or the Chancellor could explain things so clearly.
Charles. From what you say, as long as the car is treated as PLG then between March '01 and end March '17 there is no difference in road tax irrespective of engine capacity. So I could have whatever monster I fancied as long as it's 'treated' as PLG and the 23/03/2006 date was thus a devious ruse? A 2016 B5 for £265? Seems I've been misled for 11 of those 17 years so who decides the 'treatment' and what needs to be done to ensure PLG'?

Re: VED changes.
It depends on a number of factors one of them whether emissions have been made available. For some Alpinas they have other not and then classed as PLG as far as I know.music wrote: ↑Fri Mar 05, 2021 12:21 amThanks everyone. If only DVLA or the Chancellor could explain things so clearly.

Also imports can be classed as PLG which can work in your favour or against depending on the car.
My 550 is an import and classed as PLG so I pay £265 for my V8 monster. However if I had imported a 1.0ltr VW Polo it would still be classed as PLG and also cost £265.

Re: VED changes.
I think pre 2009 all Alpinas were classed as PLG even D3’s, but after this they started using the emissions based system. I am not sure of the exact cutoff but does seem that way. My 2008 B6S is PLG.
I suppose you can always just put the registration in of a car you are interested in on the DVLA site to confirm.

Re: VED changes.
My 2008 B3 is rated as PLG.
Before buying it I found out that a later model potential buy, a 2010 B3S, was rated by emissions, so it was a minor factor in deciding what to buy as the purchase was always going to be a long term ownership thing for me.
